Hi! Hello!
I'm in need of some direction to where I should go in Ceramics class.
I'm more of a 2D art kind of person, and I can't seem to come up with anything logical to make in this class. D:<

Okay, so, we're having to do some sort of coiled cup, with a handle.
If you don't know what coiling is in ceramics, it's like this:

It's like strings of clay you "coil" instead of making one big slab, usually it's way stronger and whatnot.

I want mine chameleon themed!
I have three ideas for the coils to be either
vines
a tongue, (it would morph into the handle and at the base of the handle would be a cricket!)
or a giant tail.

the problem is with all of these, I have no idea where I would put a chameleon.
And with the tongue one, which is my favorite idea, the cricket would be way too small to even be able to decipher what it was.

I've attached pictures of the little chameleon I made in class today, it took me like 2 minutes, I'll make it better looking, promise!

Can anyone tell me if they have any ideas on what I should do with him to incorporate him into the coiled cup? Or where I should put him?

I think the tail idea makes the most sense and would look the best. I would coil the tale all the way around and have the handle be the chameleon!
 
Either put him on the side with his tongue turning into the coils (or just having part of the coils as his tongue and the majority as vines) and have the handle be his tongue getting the cricket at the bottom or you can try making the chameleon the handle. (I wouldn't make all the coils the tail though...)

Also, a fly might be easier than a cricket. :)
 
I think you should have him sitting on the edge of the cup with his tongue sticking out, but not shooting. Like when they're in the first stages of aiming and there will be a little fly on the rim of the cup as well. They his tail could hang down and form the handle.

If I have just his tongue sticking out not forming anything, it likely would break off in the kiln, but it's a good idea!

This idea I like, but how would it be majority vines and then turn into his tongue without there being an empty space in between? And yeah, fly, better idea, but still, so tiny!
 
If you put it flat on the side of the cup his head/body can cover any gaps that there might be.

Maybe make the body of the chameleon the handle. Long coiled tail for the cup. Have the head "looking over the rim of the cup" getting ready to shoot at the fly on the other side.... When they first start to aim, their tongues are more of a ball shape. Or, if the tongue seems too much, put a fly on each side and aim an eye at each....

Aww that is so good! That little chameleon reminds me of mine!
The handle of the cup will probably be kind of thin and small, the cup is small.
But that cup to look at really helps :)

Everyone's ideas have really helped me, I'll definitely post pictures of it soon :)
 
I don't know if someone else suggested it, but I would make the coils vines and make little leaves to come out of them, to emphasize that. And then I would put the chameleon either as the handle on one side, and I might even mke another one on the other side. And you can make little insects to sit on the vines here and there, very little, so you don't even really see them at first unless you stop and really look at the potery.

In high school my favorite pieces were the ones you couldn't just take in at first glance, you'd have to sit there a couple extra minutes to figure out that there were all sorts of things going on.

well personally, i think it would be abit weird having just a part of the chameleon to make the pot, i would actually make the pot into vines (or even the stems of plants in which you can make some little leaves and maybe have a few flowers or buds around the top) with the effect of the jungle vines you can buy, dependant on the clay you are using depends on how much the effect will be like, then i would have the chameleon on the rim at the top, with the tongue coming down (to make the handle) and where it joins back to the pot have a fly/ insect made there so it looks like its trying to get it and it all flows, also with the vine effect you could always get a fine sieve and push clay through the sides of it and with them attach them to the pot and it gives a sort of moss looking :), also colours will be important you will need to think whether you want it contrasting or not, i personally like to make the chameleons colour look as good so i would go for a really deep brown colour vine and then bright colours on the chameleon, for my piece i found a picture of a real chameleon i liked the colours/ pattern of and just copied it over onto the model

the coil part i see you will probally have to do it sideways like the picture you put up, in this case i would do that but then smooth down the outside and using whatever tools you have which would work best, shape in your own coils but vertical or even diagonal, you could even add extra clay on to make some of the vines come out more which would make it look more realistic, but if your not after realistic then go with the craving your own vines on still but then maybe instead of texturing them like the vines, produce a pattern you like to go there, it could be anything or even like the pattern of a chameleon stretched around

oh god theres more lol XD i keep forgetting bits XD
thinking about it, having the tongue as the handles it will be very delicate and brittle which isnt good, so maybe keep with the vines as above and make a vine stick out of the side as the handle and place the chameleon on that and have the tongue coming up to the food which could be sat on the rim, or dont even have a tongue and maybe still have the food and have the chameleon with his eyes set on the food and his mouth lightly open

theres so many things you could do with this, just make sure it flows and works together and it'll be ace :D

how long do you have to create the piece?

Well, it hasn't been fired yet. But I just turned the cup into a stump of a tree, and had the cham crawling on it. The cup is way too small to do intricate things with, since I am so new to ceramics.

oooo looks good, can see wheres youve added some tone so should turn out nice colours, good luck :)
