little leaf

this is one of those - "lucky" shots :) I was sunning the baby Jax, and my daughters boyfriend's little sister caught this HUGE moth, and gave it to Emmy ,they said it could not fly- well, it can ! it only went a few feet from my finger , to the stick the babies were on - I thought they would be sacred to death of it- but they just acted like the moth was a huge leaf, and snuggled right under him ~ then the moth flew away to the corn field - anyone know what he was ? it was so cute, Em's boyfriend's little sis did not know what to feed it ( she is 8 , so she gave it a waffle - to cute :p )

I remember the first time I saw one of those when my husband (fiance then) and I were visiting North Carolina. I was in complete AWE. Coming from Utah, we don't get anything near that big.
I believe this may be it here: Polyphemus Moth

That is to cute!! I see his little head sticking out from under the wing :)

Did the waffle have any syrup on it?! ;)

I looked them up, these moths not only dont like waffles, they dont even eat! They dont have any mouth parts!! where's the fun in that!!??

HA - well, ya learn something new everyday - it was a cool moth - very big, I loved his fuzzy antenna :p glad he did not have a mouth - he was big enough to eat the baby  oh, and no syrup ;)

You just seem to somehow attract bugs…HMMMMM:roll eyes:

Nick

thats your fault - :p I was all happy with roaches and crix UNTIL I MET YOU ! now I just have to have all the weird bugs too :p ;)

The head peeking out from under the wing in priceless. I guess it really does look like a leaf if it didn't scare your babies.

That is one huge moth!! I have never seen anything that big. I can see where its wings are a bit tattered, like something tried to take a bite out of it. There is a similarity in the antennae of it and the bombyx silk moth. They do not eat either and only live for a short time as well.
