hey new to the forum and chameleons... looking to purchase my first one soon. but is there a way of determining some kind of color pattern as a baby.. besides looking at the sire and dam and hoping it turns out good.... i see a lot of babies and some males are brown and some are more grayish with some white??????? any help would be great

ahh if we could do that we would all have the pick of the litter so to speak!!!. Honestly, there is no real way to tell exactly. Sometimes they turn out nothing like their sires and sometimes they do. Sometimes they will explode with color at a very early age and sometimes they are late bloomers. See the cham in my avatar? He was an ugly duckling at 4 months. All grey with a little bit of red and look how he turned out! It is really just a waiting game. The males are more vibrantly colored than the females so if you are looking for color then you want to go with a male. Don't get me wrong, there are some beautiful females but the coloring is not as varied as the males.

oh yeah deffinitly a male for my first one but like i said some males were more on the brown side and some were gray to black... some even have a green tint... didnt know if that had anything to do with it....was just hoping to get a good one for my first....any yes your picture is awesome by the way just what i am looking for but in a Sambava...thanks for the reply

When panthers are born, up till sometimes 6 months old or more even, they are typically black, grey, brown etc.

unfortunately, until they begin to really develop coloring, you cant really pick one for what you want.

if you are looking for a particular color, try some of the site sponsors hold backs.

Haha yeah, just as Carol said we would all shoot for pick of the clutch :D

Take a close look at the Sire, and if possible try and see if your breeder knows either of the Grand-Sires. That would be your babies grandpas, seeing the Sires and Grand-Sires really help in determining what you're going to get.

Pretty parents make pretty babies my friend, it's kind of a fact.

lol yeah i figured that what the parents were then thats what the babies would somewhat turn out to be....and not trying to drag it out but so what your saying is that no matter what the original color.... brown black grey.....when they mature they could wind up alll being simialr with the same color markings etc. or totally different regardless of the color when they were born

so just as long as it is healthy when he arrives then get a happy suprise later on down the road when his color sets in

they can all grow up to be differnet or the similar.

genetics with chams are just like people.

coloring when hatched, wont really influence what they grow up to be.

That's kind of what it's like... like a kinder egg suprise. You know you have a toy, you just don't know how awsome it's going to be ;)

yeah but I have seen chameleons on here who look nothing like their sires, so it is not always true that pretty parents make pretty babies.
