Any harm in using 2 5.0 UV lights

Is there any harm in using two 5.0 bulbs in one cage for a panther? I am currently using a 100 watt Merc Vapor for heat and UV and 3 6.5K CFLs in a hood for plant and nice light. I am upgrading from a 16x16x30 screen cage to the 24x24x48 next week. I love the Mercury Vapor but am afraid it won't spread its UV over full top portion of enclosure. I thought about taking the middle CFL out and using a 5.0 there. Thoughts?

dump the MV lamp, go to a dual linear, one 6500K lamp and the other a ZooMed 10.0 UVB lamp. Use the two or three 6500K CFL lams, but raise them up a bit. For your heat source use a 50w Halogen PAR20 FLOOD from Phillips. You can pick up a 6 pack of them at Home Depot for $30, that a lot cheaper than buying them individually. Place the lamp at a 30-45* angle to the top of the cage to simulate natural angle of the sun when chameleons bask. You should never point heat lamps straight down. This can cause the chameleon to burn it's dorsal crest.

Just my input.

You say dual linear with a 10.0? Everything I've read says 5.0. I have the Merc Vap suspended over cage not sitting directly on it. Two reasons, heat and space. I'll check out the dual though, it may be easier when I move up in cage size. Thanks for the opinion and advise.

Wow, see i learn something new here everyday. My heat lamp (60 watt household) points straight down. I will make sure I change that up when I put together my boys larger cage in the next couple of weeks.

Dual linear, one lamp UVB the other 6500K. a single 10.0 in a 48" tall cage is fine if you keep the basking space 8-10" from the top. Give the guy some shade with a well planted enclosure and he should be fine. I use 10.0 and my guys sits ALLLLL day under it near his basking spot... then again he is older and doesn't move very much.

I Agree with both statements and are/is running a similar setup. Im running a dually reflector with one arcadia 6%(bout 3x more then a 10.0) and a 6500k bulb. I dont quite have my flood at a 45, but i got it angled enough so there is several inches between the fixture bottom and the screen. Im even thinking of placing the flood on the side of the cage...

Then again my cham was raised by a beardy and will sit on the balasts or even a heat rock if he wonders into the beardy cage.

Ok cool. So my original question about using my Merc Vapor 5.0 100 watt and adding a 5.0 to my 3 bulb hood would be ok? It allows more UV through out the cage and if its not harmful to my Cham, I'd like to make that switch to dual linear AFTER I've gotten the life out of the Merc Vapor. I spent a good deal of $ on it. If its not safe or beneficial then I say, Who wants to buy my Mercury Vapor bulb and deep dome? Lol

what brand is the MV lamp? I would ditch it either way.... The way I explained the way I do my lights is a sure bet way and I am not saying there aren't other ways.... but being around I've seen lots of patch work and it just ends up being easier and better for the animal if you just change things for the better rather than worry about money that might be wasted. and I don't mean that in a scolding way. But if you think about it, you'll spend the money making the change over, the damage is done, why make the animal have a questionable setup when you could just simply improve. Now, if you don't have the money to make the changes, the MV light might work if it is a lamp worth using. But a ton of UV lights isn't going to matter really. The chameleon needs to be able to get away from it, not have the UV following the animal's every move. They can regulate their exposure, so an area of the top of the cage that isn't 'covered' in UVB is fine and beneficial. I would just keep the 6500K lights on the cage in a even spread so that you have a good amount of light for plants and animal and make sure you provide a basking area, and in that area have UVB so that the animal is exposed when basking. Basking is the best time for UVB to be exposed to the animal too. The skin can better process the vitamins and produce D3 via UVB with warm skin from the basking lamp.

hehe there is a reason to the madness.

Summoner12,
Thank you again for the tip and info. My Mercury Vapor is a Zoo Med PowerSun 100. Believe me, everything I've bought for this living art piece Chameleon has been with somewhat of a money's no object when compared to what's right and what's needed. I don't mind making the switch based on money too much especially now that real estate on top of the cage will be opening up with the larger cage. That was one of the reasons I went with the MV light along with some research and feedback from others. I like the idea and will get the items needed on order.

Summoner12,
Also just noticed the AquaZamp line at the bottom of your signature line. I have mine and will be installing that on the new cage as well. Looking forward to the automated misting.
