Ambanja Chameleon Breeding

Hi All,

I am looking to breed my pair of chameleons, they are both approx 20mths old now. They have bred once before i got them and i believe the babies are now around 3-4 months old.
Can anyone tell me if there is a particular time of year that would be best to put them together? I have tried showing the male to the female and all she does is puff up, go black and start gapeing her mouth and hissing.

As to not start debates, i am not looking to profit from this breeding, i just want to be able to raise some babies chams myself. And yes if i can't find homes for them i will keep them and look after them as long as i need to.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

If your female is gaping and hissing when you show the male to her, do NOT put them together. She is not receptive and you are risking injury to one or both chameleons. Wait a week and show him to her again. She should be light colors, and not hissing or gaping.

Ryan, it appears that you are newer to the world of chameleon breeding. Please leave advice to the people with more experience. I am not trying to cause problems, but it is easy to get wrong information on the internet and we are all trying to prevent that. Most of your information is correct, but as you have stated you are getting it from the breeder and not first hand.
Welcome to the forum-a great source of information and help. :)

Julie I guess I will go a little stronger on my reply although I am saying the same thing, I agree with you completely.

Ryan if you breed a chameleon that often expect a dead cham in short order. I don't know who the breeder is but No responsible breeder would tell, or in fact breed that often.
We have a number of very knowledgeable people on this forum, like Julie above, who offered advice. Until you have some time and experience please be careful about offering information as it could result in someone else killing their chameleon and I know you would never want that.

Whoever told you this is someone you should cease listening to.

yourpet, I've found each of my females are on a slightly different schedule. As previously suggested, periodically show your male to your female (or visa versa). Eventually she will show receptive colouring.

Wow Ryan ! NO NO NO

When the female is ready she will not react to the males presence aggresively. She will be very calm. If shes huffing an puffing with her mouth open just try again in a week or two. You might notice her turn a bright pink color when she is receptive. It depends on the females normal color.
