Alternatives to Hydroton?

Well this won't be for pygmies.. It'll be for crested geckos.. but I figure I would post it here because there are a ton of smart people! LOL!

Anyways, I was looking around for 3 hours today and NO ONE had hydroton. Made me so mad. Grr.

I have one enclosure that I used broken pieces of terra cotta pot for that layer.
It's the same thing (fired clay).

Thanks Brad! I figured it was something like that. I will start breaking some pots tomorrow, haha!

i also you can get that hydraton at most of the hydroponic plant stores, way cheaper then what the pet stores have it for.

and brade is right, i think the the hydraton you buy in ball form has more carbon inside it, i could be wrong though.

I also use lava rock in the B-Q section at HomeDepot. Thats what I used in this 20 gal vertical thumbnail ( imitator ) terrarium. Although you cant see it.

Good news, the local nursery gave me some free chipped/broken pots, they said they were going to throw them away eventually..

And I found some vermiculite as well!! :)

I've used Lava Rock before. Its fairly light weight for the volume. You can usually get that at HomeDepot.

Chris

I heard lava rock, when put into water, can make the water slightly acidic.

Dean, loving that terrarium.

false bottoms work well, but are a pain to clean up and really get going properly.

syn, in pets inc, a majority of the dart enclosures are set up with false bottoms.

Yeah I saw that the Panama Night Lizard was in one.. looked pretty hard to setup, etc.
