Hi everybody,

Alas, my computer is finally giving up.
my desktop folder keep crashing..
So, this might be the end of the 7 years of journey with my handy dandy old computer.:(

I have suspected that there is something going on. Thus, I save the majority of the files in my external hard drive.
surely, today was the day.
It is still running with its last power... I hope it will stay remain for at least until the new one arrived.

I am purchasing a new computer which should arrive in 2-3 weeks.. there goes all my money.. :(

with that said, unfortunately, I cannot spend time in this forum as much as I usually do.. at least, until i fixed this annoyance,
So, there will be momentary passivity from my end.

Happy chaming everybody,
see you guys soon...

Aw, what a pain. I hope you are back up and running soon, Frans! I am glad you had the foresight to back up all of your saved info before the final crash came.

Sorry to hear about your computer Frans. You are a graphic artist I believe, do you own a Mac? If you do, you can copy everything on your hard drive to the new computer (when it arrives, if it is a Mac) with a firewire connection, even if your system fails.

Connect the wires.
Start up OLD computer holding down the T key (transfer)
Start up the new computer, and the Old one shows up on the desktop as an external hard drive!

Good luck! And if you don't have a Mac ... I'm sorry for your loss! :(

yes I am a graphic artist.
So, my computer is macintosh.
The problem seems to be in the motherboard i believe.
Every couple of minutes, all the icons on the desktop will disappear for couple of seconds and appear as usual again (almost like somebody hit a refresh button).

If i tried to save my desktop folder to an external HD, it will save until the point before the whole desktop flashes again.
I have all my applications on CD. I wonder if this is more of a logistic, plist, and script error (some kind of corrupted logistic).
If this is the case, would it corrupt my new computer if I transfer the whole HD memory?
Curently, I am using my play station 3 to go online. It's very slow... :(

lol..
Nowadays, PC is starting to catch up.
I have no problem with that :)

But, I am a sucker for sleek designs that Mac has..
Plus, the industry is still very biased on MAc. The animation company (in pre production dept) run solely on mac system.
If I use PC, I am going to have a risk with incompatible file (MAC can read PC fine.. but i still find some occassional funky things happening when it's the other way around).
When production starts, I cannot afford that problem to surface.

LOL even when I was in school it was all MAC's in the glass and I asked the teacher don't you have any PCs? and he looked at me like WTF! so I brought in my laptop the whole time and did all my work on my laptop :D

hahahaha! exactly! no PC allowed in the class :p

I'm a PC and I'm a Mac:D (PCs are from Venus ... Macs are from Mars)

I'm sure you tried all the basics, Dodolah, but just in case ...

1.
"Occasionally the PRAM can become corrupt and cause problems with your computer. If you are experiencing problems that have resisted other attempts at troubleshooting, you can sometimes solve them by "zapping" the PRAM. To do so, follow these steps:
1. Hold down the Cmd, Option, *p*, and *r* keys while starting or restarting your computer. This will automatically restart your computer a few seconds after it powers on.

2. Keep holding down the Cmd, Option, *p*, and *r* keys, and allow your computer to restart seven times. After the seventh time, let your computer power up and boot normally.

3. You may need to go in and change some of your settings, as they will be reset to factory defaults."

2.
Disk First Aid
To check your startup disk, you must run First Aid from your software installation CD or DVD. Insert the disc, restart your computer, and hold the c key down while restarting to force your computer to boot from the CD or DVD. Follow the instructions on the screen, and when the menu bar appears, from the Utilities (Mac OS X 10.5), Disk Utilities (Mac OS X 10.4), or Installer (Mac OS X 10.3) menu, select Disk Utility. In the column on the left, select the volume you want to repair, and then on the right, click the First Aid tab. You may select multiple volumes by holding down the Cmd key while clicking the volumes.

Click Verify Disk to begin a verification process (a simple check for errors), or Repair Disk to verify and repair any problems on the selected volume(s). You can stop the scan at any time by clicking Stop Verify or Stop Repair.

Disk First Aid results

The results of a verification and/or repair will be posted in the window. You should run First Aid repeatedly until you see the following message at the end of the scan, where diskname is the name of your disk:

"The volume "diskname" appears to be OK."

Note: Some volumes can be verified but not repaired. For example, the startup disk, the volume where Disk Utility resides, a write-protected disk (such as a CD-ROM or a locked floppy), or a disk that has open files can all be verified, but not repaired. Disk First Aid will warn you if one of these conditions exists when you select a volume.

What if First Aid found problems it cannot repair?

Occasionally, at the end of a scan, a message similar to the following will appear:

"Scan complete. Problems were found, but Disk First Aid cannot repair them."

This indicates that some of your files may be more severely damaged. To repair this damage, you can either back up your disk and reformat, or obtain a more comprehensive disk repair program. Two such programs are DiskWarrior from Alsoft, and TechTool Pro from Micromat Computer Systems.

3.
Reinstall the system ...

Are you running the G4 Quicksilver? (I'm still plugging away on one)
What system? OSX 4? Are you running any Classic applications? (Desktop file could need rebuilding)

Good Luck!!!!

There are 2 kinds of computer users. Those who have lost all their data, and those who will.

Thank god for chameleons to take our minds off it all.

I have 17" powerbook G4 (the PowerPC one. not the intel).
OSX 10.4 (Tiger?)
I will wait until the new one arrived. and I will try connecting it to the new one. I will only save everything I have on the desktop, Itunes files, my custom Photoshop brush files, and probably other stuff i can think of.

Then I'll do the repair disk just incase the computer decided to erase evrything and begin fresh...
Thank God for chameleon that certainly takes my mind off this crappy incident...
Lucky I felt something like this going to happen soon.
That's why I already back all my important data already.

It would have been nice to get my last 2 months file that I haven't backup yet..

Thks for the tips!
I'll follow it later after I got my new computer (it should come in 3 weeks).

WHOHOOOOO!!!!!! I am officially back!
Thank God for forums!!!!
Aside of this forum, I am also a member of macforums and Apparently this problem has swept all over across mac-user.
Due to the stupid QuickTime 7.6 update, the Finder crashes every period of times since the upgrade conflict with other old applications.
One software that become problematic after the QT update is Stuffit (Happened to me).
There are other programs as well that doesn't "agree" with the new security system and QT software update causing finder program to crash everytime.

So, my HD and my mother board are still OK!
My 8 years old Laptop is still tip top! It is the QT fault!:mad::mad::mad:

I ended up spending money to buy a new laptop. GRRRR!!!
I thought of canceling the order... but, I was thinking of buying one anyway since last year... So, I decided to get a new laptop. And, I will retire my old one from heavy duty graphic jobs.

I am so happy now!!!! :p

So, here is a tip for you apple-user.
Don't update your system and the Quick Time update. At least, until mac fixed this bug.
But, if it's too late, here is the thread that help me a ton:

Fantastic news Dodola!

Now you have a new work computer AND one just for your CHAMELEONS (and maybe a bit of back-up)

If I could count the number of fatal crashes and jobs lost when I worked at the magazine caused by "upgrades" ...

Happy to see you in one piece. Cheers! :D

Looks like you will be running Leopard now (even more bells and whistles)
But if you still run and Classic programs, you still have the trusty old G4
