A Whole New World . . . (By way of introduction)

Hi, Chameleophiles!

I'm Bruce. A couple of weeks ago, my son (also Bruce), who works at the local Petco, came home and announced "this can either be your late Christmas present, or I'll give it to my friend" - as he pulled a box out of his coat.

A box with holes in it. One of his customers had gotten a dog, and decided to offer some of their other pets up for adoption.

He lifted out a small, tall, pale blue-green lizard.

I've always kind of loved chameleons, especially after having watched a litter of Jackson's being born in a local pet shop window as a kid, but have also been a little fearful of their reputation.

I couldn't say no to this one.

She's a turquoise-blue veiled cham, with blotches on her sides that range from white to brown. Sometimes, little dark green dots make an appearance...

So, I dove into the internet, read some care sheets, picked up a Reptibreeze, some lighting, bugs and a Little Dripper. Filled the screen enclosure with a Schifflera and a vine. Dusted bugs with calcium (Petco has three varieties with D3, _none_ without!) and put them into a Gladware container atop the plant.

Now, a name was a bit more difficult. Then it hit me - indeed, it had been staring me in the face since my kids were small; This elegant lizard from Arabia, dressed all in turquoise and aqua, being treated like a princess ... I shall call her Jasmine!

Someday, I'll get a good photo of her, too - but for now, she's really very shy. (She was afraid of the Schifflera for a few days - but then she found out that it tastes good, LOL!)

Anyway ... Hi, Everyone!!

P.S. - Should I be stockpiling 60 watt incandescent lightbulbs?!

Hi Bruce! Congrats on joining chameleon ownership and welcome to the forum.

Things like the plain calcium you'll have to find online typically, most pet stores don't carry things like that, unfortunately.

Just in case, I'm going to link you to a few good reads on veileds and females in particular, which you may find useful if you have any further questions:

And of course, if you still have questions about anything please feel free to ask!

Thanks for the welcomes, everyone!

Special thanks to Werecat and Olimpia - though I'd read some of those linked caresheets for veileds, they're all worthy of another go-through!!

I know she'll need to be rationed a bit as she gets older, but for right now, Jasmine is knocking back about 5-8 crickets daily. I've tried her on superworms and dubia, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of interest at the moment. I did find a small container of non-D3 calcium - and then my son showed me that he'd bought a five-pound bag a while back, and has a big ol' tupperware full of the stuff. (9_9) I've got a bottle of Repashy's calcium/multivitamin supplement for leopard geckos - is that OK for her a couple of times a month?

Here's a photo of her setup:

And the little blue lizard herself, sitting on my hand. (She looks like she's praying, but I suspect she's more ready to ninja out on me . . . ):
