a very itchy eye?

Hampton

New Member
I am new to the forum and a new chameleon owner and am not fully acquainted with their behavior so this might be silly or just me being paranoid. Hampton is a 3 and a half month old ambanja panther chameleon. I have only had him since Sunday, he has a screen cage with a repti sun 5.0 and a 60 watt basking bulb and 2 live plants in his cage a schefflerra arboricola and a golden pothos. The schefflerra was just added to his cage today. I have been spraying his cage 3 times daily and have his cage on a side table near my desk in a low traffic area. I have been avoiding holding him to hopefully allow him to get familiar with his new home but have been feeding him 3-4 crickets daily using calcium dust at every other feeding and calcium with vitamin d once a week he also has a dripper in his cage for water. whew that was a lot of info but if you guys are still with me my question is today I have noticed him starting to itch his left eye excessively using his hind legs and rubbing it up on his plants and his dripper and branches is this something I need to be concerned about could it be stress or the new plant maybe I thought that I bought one that wasnt toxic? and i replaced the soil with one without fertilizer or plant food and added rocks. Other then the apparent itch he has been keeping his eye open and it doesnt appear injured and he seems to have full function. I am very nervous about this issue because he is my first chameleon and I really dont want to do anything wrong that could hurt him any suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated or about anything else I mentioned that might be wrong would also be helpful. Thanks in advance to everyone.

Potho is a safe plant for chameleons but I guess it's possible one cham could be allergic. You could try taking it back out to see if that helps. Is he about to shed? Mine scratch when they are shedding. Could he maybe have something in his eye? Try misting extra long with really warm water and see it he can wash out him eye.

thank you shedding could be it i dont know if he is getting ready to shed or just finished he has a couple patches now though i hope thats it it just seems very specifically one eye thats itching is why im so worried he itches so hard i dont want him to hurt himself more and i will try the warm water buy he usually runs from my when i water he doesnt seem to like it much

Howdy Christina,

Welcome fellow Southern Californian :). You must have picked-up you Panther at the NARBC show. You probably bumped into half of the "South Bay Chameleon Keepers" (SBCK) group while wandering around the show.

Keep a careful watch for any changes, good or bad. If you see any cloudiness in that eye, he'll need antibiotic drops to treat it. It is not uncommon for a chameleon to rub an eye once in a while but if he keeps it up for days then there are a number of possibilities other than an infection such as dirt, shed, allergy, insecticide, etc. Continuous closure during daylight hours is a sure sign of trouble that may even require a Vet's intervention.

Keep these Vets in your Rolodex :):
