My little jax, Brave, has been climbing the walls of his enclosure. He has been growing bigger, but is still only maybe 3 1/2 inches long total (with tail curled).

His enclosure is 16x16x20 inches, the one I used for Monty (cleaned and refurbished for Brave's arrival).

He even sleeps on the wall or ceiling sometimes.

Anyone have an idea why? Has no problems other than slight gular edema, gets correct temps, supplements, humidity, etc, gets lots of water, has tons of hiding places.

It might just be an age thing. I've read people comment on their young chams being screen climbers. I got my Jax when he was about 7 months old. He was (and still is) quite the adventurous explorer. He climbed the screen constantly. Giving him tons more space (his cage is 2x3x6) with lots to climb and regular time to free range has reduced how much he climbs the screen at 1 year 4 months, but he does still do it.

I think its kinda normal Saint. Eva has done this time and time again on the side screen, top, and has never stopped doing it. I found that as eva was younger she would climb the walls like crazy, and then I would FR her and she would settle down for a couple of days. They have so much energy when younger. IMO I think its normal just watch the nails on him, Eva has lost two nails because they got stuck. Good Luck to you and Brave

If Brave is a climber, you can go to a Home Depot or Lowe's and pick up plastic landscaping fencing. It's made up of 1" square holes, like a large mesh. I ziptied that in the insides of my cages for my guys, and they can climb on it much easier without fear of pulling our their nails.

Yeah I know ^

I am concerned for his nails.

I already know that he's an explorer, he's going to enjoy free ranging (unlike my hermit grump Monty) because I put the tiny free range tree out for him and he immediately went out and fell asleep because it was late. I felt bad taking him off it lol.

He will grow out of the cage in maybe a month or two, or less, so I'm prepared to buy him a bigger, less nail-harmful cage

I think Jackson's are more active than other species sometimes (at least panthers and veileds). My little Othello used to be up and down all day long, he was never in the same spot twice when I checked on everyone. I can imagine it's even worse when they're little, since they have that energy to go all over the place.

My male jacksons is the same way. All over the place, sleeps in some odd places etc. Hes still young and has plenty of cage space. Yet my female is usually in the same spot up near the top of the cage for the most part. Never really seems to explore.

Their cages are set up a little differently. I've been wondering if I should change hers.
