A New Mongabay Article About Recent Increases in Deforestation in Ampijoroana

Here is a new article by Mongabay that reports a recent increase in deforestation recently in the Ampijoroana region of Madagascar. The reports come from GloF-DAS technology that relies on NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS and is how this deforestation was detected. This is extremely neat technology. If political stability returns to Madagascar ideally the island is going to pick up where it left off and return down the path of being a conservation accomplishment and this deforestation should slow or stop. Here's a link.

Agriculturally speaking there are ways to produce charcoal and lumber that could limit or stop local Malagasy from cutting down and burning their local forests for their local needs. Along with there are sustainable agricultural practices that would allow Malagasy farmers to farm rice and other crops in areas long term. This would stop farmers from moving in and clearing land with slash and burn agriculture to locate land that is fertile.

It is sad that the government cares so little about what is happening to the land of Madagascar. Now many years will this go on? I am not sure the island can take much more.

The Madagascar government had a coup in 2009, and actually appears with its first presidential elections since this October 2013 towards making steps to correct these government problems. I think Wildlife is extremely important to the Malagasy government they just have not got finances, organization, or resources to take care of the forests sustainably long term in their present state. A big part of Madagascar's agenda is to secure foreign donors for their economy and continued conservation of there wildlife contributes to that kind of sponsorship. Along with next go back to the path it was on in regards as being a world renowned spot for wildlife and on a path for accomplished conservation.

I know, we have been over this before, and I understand the issues are not as simple as I would like it to be. But it will always make me very sad. I can't understand why the rest of the world doesn't care. But since we don't care about humans who die for lack of food and water, why would I expect our world to care about animals that will disappear form our world.:(

It is a heavy issue and is complicated on many levels. However I think these issues humanitarian and wildlife conservation are important to the people of the world. However as a child learning to stand you can encourage them and sponsor them however in the end you have got to allow them to stand up for themselves. With this coup ending and if conservation programs continue I think accomplishments on humanitarian and wildlife conservation levels are going to be produced.

I agree with you and hope we are correct, but as usual for me, I wish it could all be done tomorrow.

That is the one thing about wildlife conservation. To watch the results happen the results happen over a longer period of time. It is similar although not the same to raising a family.
