A couple of my favorite new finds

I figured I would share a couple of my new "tools" as a keeper that I feel are making my life easier.

Since I found these bins I feel as though my life (as an insect keeper) is much improved! I have a couple species that climb smooth surfaces and regardless of having a lid on the bin or using oils/vaseline to prevent them from climbing I would always find a little green banana roach out and about every so often. So obviously they were getting to the top and very simply just squeezing out under the lid because of how it sits. Well, no more! I found these at Target but I imagine they are available in other places if you looked, but they are Hefty brand and they have the most life-changing lid.

The way the lid and the edge of the bin overlap it's impossible for the roaches to squeeze through. Take that, surinam and banana roaches!

Look, a cave roach came out to say hi and everything!

Also, I found these at Target as well and I think they are awesome. No more messing around with those Repashy bags they keep their supplements in, that tip over or that may not seal up completely. (I tip mine over aaaalll the time, sending supplement flying everywhere across the table-tops!) These suckers are air-tight and I find them super cute. Just scoop out what you need with a little spoon and voila, no more messing with those baggies.

And yes, I label everything lol. More for the sake of my boyfriend than anything else, but I even have them on each chameleon cage.

Very nice! Do the bins come in bigger sizes? You know, for some of us who are trying to develop colonies?? :D

***edit- I see the one in the background in the 1st pic. Just how big a boy is that bin? :)

Very cool I like those tubs. Here is a trick if you want to keep climbing and flying species in a bigger tub. Go to office depot or staples and they have waterproof storage bins they lock and they have a rubber seal in the lip of the lid that seals them water tight :).... And they have sizes from small to huge..... I just took clear smooth tubs and went to home depot and got the rubber door seals that we all have around our doors that are sticky on one side and smooth on the other side and come in different widths and thickness I stick the seal to the inside ridge of the lid and when I put the lid on it makes a water tight seal so nothing gets out and I screen the sides so I can stack them for space:)

This is a great idea! Thx for the info! :)

Yes! I like these 34qt bins for my roach colonies but they have much bigger ones, that are both tall and wide.

nice work!

Yeah I didn't know it till the other day but the clear plastic containers are smoother than the opaque colored ones. Something about the pigmentation has an impact on the plastic.

small dubia nymph's can climb some colored containers but are not as capable of climbing the clear steralite containers.

Thanks for that tip, Texas! That's definitely roach proof, it sounds.

No prob. And yeah it works awesome I use the tall clear tubs with the seal for my green banana roaches and my giant green banana roach colonys.... But I think I am going to go grab some of those tubs you have for my hissers so I can use the thicker seal on the lid :)

Great post Olimpia!! I LOVE these bins and first found them at Lowe's but Target now carries a better supply of sizes. I use them for all my crested geckos with great success. They have a really nice 6.5L tall size that is perfect for hatchling cresties.

Be careful because as much as you think these lids are secure I have had 3/4 crickets escape from them like a flood  They overlap but leave a space for air exchange which I have found to be a problem with crickets and haven't tried them on roaches but I can bet if a cricket can get out a roach shouldn't have a hard time specially a nymph

But I am a HUGE fan of the tubs and have probably 40 or so with various things in them ;)

LOVE the labels by the way!! Do you have a label maker that does those??

Wow really? I really pissed off my surinamers yesterday and none could make it out. I'll keep a good eye out. I'm picking up vaseline today anyway to double up my defenses! Lol

Thanks! No, I make the labels myself in word, print them, and use a cutboard to cut the clean borders.

Thanks Hoj! I think I've managed to label everything in there. I even made some for each cage, with the chameleon's name, species, date of birth, and sex. Again, more for my boyfriend than anything but I like doing it.
It saves me from going "Babe, can you put crickets into Cassio's cage?"
"... who?"
"The male carpet."
"....who?"
At least now he can read the labels and figure it out himself!

Oh, and as a small update I guess - I've had these bins for a few weeks now and I haven't had any more roaches running free. I put a layer of vaseline around the edge as well, just in case, with the small climber species and between one thing and the other it is doing such a great job. I'm super happy. Plus I love how the bins look in the room, so overall I'm pretty pleased.
