A burn?

I think my Brody got a burn on her head. :( Here are a couple of pics of it last night. She was in her sleeping spot and ready for lights out when I snapped these. It is on the front of her veil up near the top. It was whitish last night and today it is blacker.

If it is a burn do I need to treat it in any way? I have already raised her basking lamp up and opened the window to get more cooler air in there. Her enclosure is in front of the window and she really loves it there but my fear is that yesterday when I left for a few hours I forgot to open the window and it just got too hot in her basking area. :( I feel like a bad mommy!

I use Silver Sulfadiazine cream on burns. It works great! You can get it from your vet or pharmacy. It looks like a small burn to me.

Normally the hottest it gets in her basking would be 90. The issue is that I didnt open the window in the room and I know that room heats up. I have a 4 year old who is being a total PITA lately so I totally forgot when I left.

Do I need to treat it or will it heal on its own? If I do need to it is no prob and I can get the stuff to treat it tonight. Just making sure.

Is she able to touch the very top of the cage? Because then they are like touching the heat lamp, which isn't good.

Hi Rachel. I would take Chuck's suggestion and get the Silver Sulfadiazine or at the very least some neosporin. There is no sense in waiting for an infection to start and then treating. Better to be safe than sorry.:p

If you put her in sunshine for part of the day, turn the basking lamp off. The sunshine brings in heat. There are some days I even have to drop a curtain over the window because of how hot it gets.

Don't turn off the UV light though, they can't get UV through a window. (I know you know this, it's just an FYI for others who don't). Anyway, putting something on the spot won't hurt. I can't really see it well enough to know if it is a burn or not. All my basking lights are 6-8" away from the basking spot. I check the temp inside the cage right by where they sit every once in awhile to make sure the placement of the lamp is correct.

Thank you. I will start switching that basking bulb off when I have the curtain open. I wasnt sure if I should have both or not.

Oh I wanted to add that yesterday I moved it up about 6-7 inches to make sure this doesn’t happen again. :)
Howdy Rachel,

As a "sanity check", stick your hand right at the basking location and see what it feels like after a minute or two of direct exposure. If you feel a "cooking" sensation or smell burning flesh then your basking light is too close and or too powerful . It should feel nice and comfortably warm and you shouldn't have the urge to yank your hand out of the way by the end of that minute or two of exposure.

Thank you Dave. Makes total sense and I dont know why I didnt take the time to do that. *smacks self in forehead*

How did you make out, full recovery? I think that the same thing has happen to our veiled. His veil is looking a little white on top, if it turn brown I will know for sure I let him out for a run around his room today and forgot to turn his heat lamp off. I think he got a little too close.
