I have an EOS 50D and the pictures that are kind of soft looking are from my POS 28-135mm IS-USM lens... it's partially a focus issue but the lens is kinda crappy so when cropping in on a photo the lens really shows it's ass My cheap lens takes better pics but the zoom isn't as good and I wanted some more macro shots... so I used the bigger lens. My smaller cheaper lens is a 18-55mm IS 'kit' lens. Got it off craigslist for 100 bucks from someone who never used it.
