26g Reef

This tank used to be my pride and joy but moving it twice about 6 months apart left it with a horrible hair algae problem. Unfortunately I lost a number of my favorite corals. I'd get the water tested, and do it myself, and everything was always within acceptable levels. Finally I got desperate and just left it in darkness for 5 days straight. Then I turned on just the actinics for a day followed by three more days in the dark. Most of it got really loose and I was able to siphon it out. Finally I got a sea hare to eat the rest of it and all of a sudden it started looking much, much better. So much better that I went out the other day and bought frags of 3 different colors of Montipora capricornis to celebrate.

I don't know much about coral or fish, but it looks beautiful!! If I ever got one, I hope it would end up looking at least half as nice as yours.

its starting to come back. its looking good to. im treatin my 5g nano reef for red slime right now...

Looking good Kent, I need to frag up a bunch of Zoas and palys. I'll let you know when they are ready for ya

Sweet! Cool zoas and palys are my newest addiction! I'll swing by today for those shnails and hermits.

Red legged mexican hermits consume Cyano, but you need to fix the reason you have cyano, or they will never remove it
Scarlets are the bright red hermits that grow large
Red leg mexicans are the standard .99 hermit here in so cal

the algae you have left looks to be Byroposis, try raising your Magnesium levels up to 1450-1500, seems to impede it's growth

That's the stuff under the bird's nest, right? It's never gotten too bad, whatever it is and kinda like it. But, I am starting to supplement more now that it's back to normal so raising the magnesium should happen.

And why does coraline grow so well on my tank but not on the rocks?? They should all be covered at the rate I scrub it from the plastic!

Got a few more things and took some more blurry pics. Still trying to figure out the camera.

I'm pretty sure these are Fire N Ice zoas. They have reddish-orange skirts and blue centers. What ever they are, I really like 'em!

I also got a little 4 polyp frag of these insanely bright palys. They're not very easy to get pics of but I think you can get the idea. The seller is calling them Atma's Wails. Again, I REALLY like 'em!

wow your tank is beautiful! If i could stop collecting reptiles i would love to get a saltwater reef tank, but i know i have no where near enough $$ to support reptiles and a saltwater tank

What an awesome tank, Kent! I used to have a nice setup when I was in high school and then life happens. One of these days, I hope to have another. Yours is very sweet! :D

shinin'

Looks great to me from here. I think your new frags should thrive.

I miss having a little reef too. Landlord forbids it. Anyone want a Red Sea Max?...

Yeah Kent I had a 75 gal reef for 5-6 yrs. Got burned out and sold it about 7 yrs ago. Now I got the salt water bug again. lol I love those new bio cubes with the built in metal halide fixtures and the built in refug in the back. Thats so much nicer and cleaner looking than seeing all the equipment. Is that what you have?

i wish out salt water tank was that nice...we can never seem to keep the nitrates down though...they sure are beautiful! i could sit for hours and watch them....:)

i really like this tank. how well does the xenia do? just curious cause its only a 26g and this stuff grows like weeds; theres a 150g tank at my job thats become probably around 1/3 pumping xenia and im pullin pieces off of the overflow at least like once a week.:D i can see that stuff taking over a small tank unless you "trim it back" a bit every now and then. still a very cool coral, especially if you have the room for a lot of it; one of the coolest sights ive ever seen is a big patch of xenia all pumping independently of each other.

look up a product called cycle. its nitrifying bacteria in a bottle that would take care of the nitrate over a short period of time. a little foggy as to who makes it but ill take a look tomorrow at work and get back to you.
