10.0 vs 5.0

Someone tried telling me that 10.0s are deadly and should not even be manufactured?

What really is the truth behind 5.0 and 10.0? How much is blocked by screen? Which is better?

Whoever said this, I would recommend not taking any advice from them.

5.0's are fine, 10.0's are fine. Neither give anywhere close to the same UVB as chams that are outside. So if 10.0's were bad, then any cham outside is even worse off.

5.0's most times, from checking with my own UV meter barely give enough UVB through screen. Chams need a minimum of 13 microwatts to synthesize d3. Some of my 5.0's through screen at 4-6" gave less. And they were less than 3 months old.

I tend to just use 10.0's as my enclosures are very large, some through screen, some not. The key thing is to have areas where they can get out of the light if they want to.

Whoever said that is an idiot. 10.0s are nesssary for bigger chams and bigger cages. A 10.0 is awesome for oustalets and reptariums.

I agree with the above. If there are options, the cham will choose what it needs. A 10.0 isn't a death ray (depending on brand, it may be less than some 5.0)

Thank you guys.

I found this guy on reddit who runs the chameleon subreddit, and he CONSTANTLY says to never refer anyone to this forum because it'll "deter people away from his subreddit".

Well, to put it bluntly, the subreddit has low activity, and only FEW knowledgable people there.

Here we have TONS of info right off the bat. You ask a question and 9/10 times it's answered within 10 minutes accurately.

He said something like "who the hell would use 10.0's on their chameleon? That's like a death sentence!" and to be fair he is VERY good at chams, but apparently doesn't know that 10.0s are good.

I forgot to answer your question about the screen and how much UVB it filters. If it's the fine screen like ReptiBreezes and the like, it filters between 30-50% of the UVB.

1/4-1/2" hole screening like vinyl coated hardware cloth is like 5-10% from my own readings.

Here is a good post from Todd @ light your reptiles.

Post #15. He knows his stuff. Arcadias also give more UVB than 5.0's and 10.0's. He sells those (I have 3). If they were bad, then he wouldn't be selling them!

Based on solarmeter studies by myself and others I decided some time ago that the 5.0s weren't even worth the money, and I've been using the Reptisun 10.0s since. (The Reptisun brand is stronger/better than the Reptiglo)

And the Kammers are indeed very reputable, but we can't figure out where they got that info from. Nothing else seems to support that statement.
