I have never done it that way. There is more than one that would work I'm sure. I was taught cleaning off the roots could kill your plant, or at least cause it problems while it regrows new roots.
You can also add Riverstone to the top of the soil. It has worked OK for me witha couple plants.

I was thinking that if I needed more cages I would do 3 16"x16"x36" high that could fit under another 4' fixture. another good idea is the monarch tents under baby cages but I dont have a greenhouse lol
