Yeah, crickets start to smell without proper ventilation.
The crickets will only lay eggs on substrate.
Just don't make the soil too deep, so this way they will be able to walk out and munch on some food.

Usually both require a 90degree matt on one side of the container.

You should be fine. It's a simple fix. It looks like just dry wall repair. All you have to do is cut out the sections that are wet and replace with new dry wall. Make sure everything is all dry. Just make sure you get to it before it starts to grow mold, that would be no bueno.
I know how that goes. If you want try and post a close up of the base of the tail. Some females do show a bit of color on those areas, but you never know.
