My veiled is over a year old can I go up to large insects with him and be safe?

I thoroughly enjoy giving my veiled natural light he seems to love it and his colors really come out as soon as he sees it. One question though why would he get more aggressive once he's in the direct light? He fights me to the death haha is it just that he wants to stay in the light?
