    Live plants

I'm noticing that all of the baby tears I look at say that they're an aquatic underwater plant??? Do they need shade? Or no shade? I ordered some small spider plants, a dwarf umbrella tree, a plectranthus australia (Swedish ivy begonia??), an asparagus fern and a hibiscus rosa-sinensis. What...

Looking for a new plant for my enclosure.

...are used by many people and leak sap that can hurt the eyes and cause irritation, but people have few problems. Pothos is full of oxalate crystals, but is also used frequently. Safe plant list are good guides, but know that there are many plants that may be cautioned about, but are actually...

    What Is This?

Yep, as I thought that's one of the unsafe species of Schefflera. They have toxic calcium oxalate crystals that can be leathal. Generally it isn't suggested to use these for veileds because they're known to consume plants often. I do know people that use them for larger species because they...

    vine plant

Hello, What you are showing is the vining version of philodendron. I stay away from this plant because it can release calcium oxalate crystals if bitten or broke. Just not a great situation for chameleons. It is a beautiful hardy vine so I can see why you would want to use it. There are so many...

    Vegetables to feed to chameleon?

No, pothos is not toxic. It is high in oxalate crystals, which many plants are. These crystals can irritate the mouth and act as a deterrant against being munched on. Obviously, if the cham is munching it, the crystals aren't bothering it. In HUGE amounts, the oxalis acid could bind calcium, but...

    Cool plant??

...pose no real threat. I won't use plants that have known toxicity with veileds, if it's anything more than a possible belly ache or oxalate crystals. Most other chameleons are safe with most plants and I find way more instances of plants possibly causing mechanical injury or being unsuitable...

    Toxic scefflera??

Toxic is a go to word for all sorts of plant related potential for harm, from mild irritants and deterrents ( oxalate crystals/ hairs/ ficus sap ), to potential allergies in people, and of course, actually medically significant toxins. Your Schefflera is no more "toxic" than what is commonly...

Is this plant safe to put inside my chameleon cage?

...irritation, and upset stomach if eaten, or deadly. The fact is, virtually all plants have defenses, such as hard to digest tannins, oxalate crystals, irritating saps, and so on. The key is knowing your plant and your chameleon and making decisions based on the reality for potential harm...

    Toxic scefflera??

You hit something that a lot of people don't know. Pothos can be harmful if large quantities are eaten, yet they are one of the most commonly suggested plant. Chase

    Safe Plant

I would say no, all the plants in the Aroid family have oxalic acid crystals in their tissues that cause an immediate burning sensation when eaten. Although Spathiphyllum plants don't present very many of these crystals, I wouldn't recommend it.

    Safe Plant

It has the same toxic compound that Pothos has in it. I do not understand why people on chameleon lists think Pothos is a safe plant.

    Total Bites for Crickets

I am not sure what you mean by "on the same level as carrots". All of the occasional foods are high in oxalates. This substance binds with calcium to form calcium oxylate which are tiny crystals that sort of get "stuck" in the tubules that make up the kidney causing renal damage. And by...

    Looking for reassurance regarding MBD

His front legs look slightly bowed. It would be unlikely for that level of MBD, if present, to cause him to lose his appetite or be lethargic. That's generally only seen at more severe stages unless there is a secondary problem. When I travel with my chams I put them in a small cardboard box...

    New enclosure setups and revamp

Got this off google. All parts of the plant are poisonous if ingested. A number of other sites claims that this is a myth. It contains calcium oxalate. Needle-like calcium oxalate crystals could irritate different sensitive skin parts, mucosa

so would you suggest that I get a different plant then? The cham that is going in here doesn't munch on plants

    Is Pothos Safe?

I read that Pothos is supposed to be a safe plant for Chameleons but it is on every toxic plant list I've gone through for dogs, cats and birds. The Pet Poison Help Line states this: "The Golden Pothos, commonly known as Devil’s ivy, is part of the Araceae family. Both the stem and the...

What Kind of Plant is this

It is a Chinese Evergreen or Aglaonema. The sap contains calcium oxalate crystals so it is considered toxic. The sap can cause skin and eye irritation from contact as well. I do not know if the toxicity relates to chameleons or not. It is not on either safe plant list that I have so I would...

Male dead, female fading? Please advise...

I am aware. Hence the light I am using. The SolarGlow. Hey I have an idea. Instead of everyone bickering about who knows more of the right information, let's stay on topic? FYI, since we're sharing brain pans here, philodendron is not the proper name for it. Philodendrons are a different...

    very conflicted with plants
