    Substrate or Not?

I think pear is a fine choice, unlikely to cause impaction and helps with humidity and odor control. As stated, it is not suitable for most plants and peat based pitting mixes have pH stabilizers to make them suitable, even organic ones. Peat or any organic, moist substrate, can invite stagnant...

    Substrate or Not?

I also use a fan drawing air out of my enclosures and often times leave a room fan on depending on the time of year. Although, I'm just using small computer fans since I am working on a much smaller scale!!! I have ventilation at the bottom as well but once again on a much smaller scale!

    gnat problems in cages!

...the soil and added a two to three inch layer of sand and covered that with river rocks. I watered thoroughly with the Nema-globe fungus gnat control. I have a few now but not enough to even bother with. I also read that you can use 3% hydrogen peroxide on the soil too. I was going to try...

    Fungus gnats on poop only

Fungus gnats are a difficult infestation to be rid of and easy to get since they can come in a lot of potting soils. You pretty much have to pull the plant out of the enclosure and let it dry out completely. If I remember right, the eggs hatch about every two weeks. There are treatments, but it...

is apple cider trap safe inside cage

Hate to be a buzzkill but even though carnivorous plants do consume bugs, they're horrible at pest control. I agree with the flypaper outside of the cage. Keeps control of the gnats and won't hurt your lil cham! If its coming from the pot, make sure you flush it and cover in sand and rocks.

    Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis

    B. t. i. with a notation for the strain that is effective on fungus gnats (not all Bti strains work on gnats), are safe and effective when used as a soil drench. I use the form in a product sold as "Mosquito Bits". I do not find the control is as complete as when using Imidacloprid. Neither is...

    Omar's re-do is done!

I dug out most of the dirt, added more sand, replaced and replanted, covered with weed-block, then covered with a couple inches of play sand, then covered that with river rock. I also watered with a biologic control for fungus gnats before I put down the block and sand. I put in a ton more...

    Getting rid of gnats

I had the same problem! I hate those little buggers! I have plants planted directly in soil in the bottome of Omar's cage and I have been battling them as well. Here is what I have done: I removed all of the plants except his ficus (it had already suffered from being moved in the summer...

How to get rid of tiny flies in cage?

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that I put sand as the top layer, it helps prevent the gnats from reproducing.
