Carnivorous plants in habitat - good or bad?

+1. I had the Nepenthes hanging in the 48" enclosure under two 70W Sansis. It did pretty well, and we had to remove it and split it. Since then they've been hanging in the front window where Ol' Mr. GrumpyPants still climbs on them, and it's looking like we'll have to split them again. I...

    gnat solution

Why outside? I had planned on putting all 3 inside. Didn't find anything about their being toxic. All I could find locally was the pitcher plant (The garden stores are all stinking with them this year, but not carrying the other two, which they usually do. :(). The pitcher plant will also...

    Out of ideas.

Well yes. Of course the cage looks much better!! It still could use some work, but it looks way better. Idk if I would put the fly trap inside.... I have pitcher plants that I use inside of my enclosures.

    Nepenthes care and benefits

Well I took the enclosure down, had them a few years, but accidentally killed them when I moved. I put them in my garage over the winter and made a little greenhouse with a space heater, but the humidity and lighting was lacking. Most of my plants weren't happy, but survived... the nepenthes...

A Carnivorous Plant Has Been Hiding in Plain Sight in North America

OK here comes the obnoxious CP expert! Five hundred dollars says those VFT were planted by a person-they are only native to about 100 square miles in NC/SC. But there are colonies planted and surviving in Ca and Fla. Not the same as being native. There is only one species but tons of...

    Pitcher plant "fertilization"...

For all you plant folk out there... I know its said that you aren't supposed to fertilize them, but I'm wondering if I can artificially "naturally" fertilize them. What I mean, is can I throw death crickets, hawkmoths, roaches, etc. into the pitchers to give it food? More over, should I? These...

    I have too many animals

Do you keep any types that have to go into dormancy? I used to keep some pitchers that had to spend a few months in the fridge each year 😄

    Gnats, Gnats, Everywhere.

The price makes it hard for me to want to buy these plants. Lol. I have 1 pitcher plant and there are gnats all through the pitchers. Its kinda cool to see, and kinda unnerving. Haha

    Need help with fogger

It’s looking good. I really like the new plants. The 7% shade dweller bulbs unfortunately don’t put out an enormous amount of UVB despite the higher “UVB %”. @Beman is correct that the intensity of the UVA is quite a bit lower (17% vs 30%), and you actually want that UVA as well. these bulbs...

First Veiled! Supply check pls? + And some general questions

I believe these are both UVB lamps. You only need the Arcadia 6% You'll need a basking lamp, but that can be a household incandescent (not LED) Incandescent floods (not spots) also make good basking bulbs. This is unnecessary, and for the MistKing, you should really be using distilled or RO...

    New enclosure done! Woo!

...I have been moving them around and wedging them in places to see where they do best. Haven't committed to gluing them down yet. Pitcher plants are great too, and enjoy being near by mister and under my plant spotlight so far. One new pitcher has formed in just a few weeks, and a few more baby...

    Plant pot size preferences?

...likely outgrow them at some point. The 3 centerpiece plants are currently in 9" pots, there's a snake plant in a 6", and climbers are planted in rectangular trays along the trellis on the back wall. Also a pitcher plant hanging in a 4" pot. May I ask why you don't want anything on the floor?

    New enclosure done! Woo!

There are different methods; Hydra_cosplay used one—I used a different one; both are fine. All my plants except one (a hanging pitcher plant) are on the bottom. I used a couple of tall (3½ ft.) centerpiece plants, and a shorter scheflerra raised up on an inverted pot of the same size.

    Nepenthes care and benefits

I wouldn't recommend using tap water unless it's tested. Carnivores are very sensitive to the mineral content. You could have good quality water with high mineral content(good for most plants/people, bad for carnivorous) But great post either way, I agree with everything you're saying. And I...

    Plants are dying ...

I have no idea what "the bottom drainage thing" is or may be, but I agree it sounds like a drainage problem. All my pots (except the pitcher plant, which hangs and has drainage holes) are on the enclosure floor, and the misting water never seems to get down that far; we have to water the plants...
