Bit too big, don’t want it to block the lights

I’m almost done setting up a chameleon cage and I want to add more sticks, can I use sticks from my yard? If so should I wash them off and how? Would it be ok to use sticks with lots of bark, or should I aim for smoother sticks? Worst case I’ll buy artificial ones, but it would be good to know...
