Can be as early as 6 months, but a year is more common. If you search the threads there are hundreds of posts on females, laying bins, and other problems you can think of!
That should work. I've had success with just regular damp sand too. Definitely sounds like she needs to lay soon. If you search lay boxes this forum has a ton of great conversations about them.
