Thanx,
well, I don't have a glass terrarium because it looks great,
it's just that the more experienced cham keepers really advice not to use flexariums for chameleons (except chams that live in mountains) in our climate.
And the substrate, I read much about it here, but you never hear...
Here's my terrarium,
it's glass and it has substrate, I know, that's how everybody does it over here.
Glass keeps the cold out in winter, and the substrate keeps the humidity up, it's great for plants, and he doesn't eat it.
Comments are welcome ;)
Greetz:p
Perhaps if mine had ever eaten dirt, I might not have continued using it.
But why do our chams over here never or very rarely eat dirt,
and yours apparently do it all of the time ... ?
But ways seem effective to me as we're both succesfully keeping chams this way for years.
And drainage...
I just find it so curious,
almost every one of you saw them eat dirt, and doesn't use substrate
and if I post it on a dutch forum, where everybody uses substrate, they think I'm crazy :D
Well,
If they were to eat it in big quantities, it might impact them,
BUT I think there's a really slight chance of that happening as I haven't heard of a single case yet over here.
I just opened up a poll on a Dutch forum to be sure;
so far 10% doesn't use substrate and 90% does use...
And if it is so that 'Geophagy' (eating soil) is performed to get the lacking minerals,
could there be a distinct difference between the diets or something of European and American chameleons, so that the American ones would want to eat soil?
Because you all agree that chams eat soil, and I...
Weird,
you never read it on the European forums, lots of people use substrate here, none of them complained about chams eating it or getting impacted...
Guess opinions and experiences will always differ.
I see quite a lot of difference betweet the American and the European way of keeping chams...
I second this !
In Belgium it is the same way.
Only had 2 chams yet, but none of them ate the substrate,
and I have never heard a story before of anyone who lost a cham due to impaction by substrate other than bark...
And cocopeat is easy to keep clean, doesn't stink or grow fungus or...
I've never seen my veiled or pardalis eat soil,
they prefer crickets I guess...
Never heard it on a Dutch or Belgian forum before, most people I know use soil in their chams' cages. I can show you tens of pictures of people's terrariums with soil, but none of them ever complained about their...
Mine always sleeps on a different spot.
Sometimes in a plant, against the glass, on a branch in an open spot, on top of a plant, ...
some time ago, he was sleeping, hanging on the rail of the glass door :D
Thanks, and yes, they are real. 4 ficus banjamini's, and some other smaller plants.
Also some fake ones hanging on the glass.
And if anyone is wondering, no, he doens't eat the substrate, nor do I know anyone who has had the problem, and I know quite some people who use substrate...
Not only in the UK...
They are easily accesable over here in Europe,
(we use them mostly in summertime, when there's enough sunlight, to let them bask outside in the sun for a while.)
It's just that, with our climate, it's easier to create a good environment inside a glass cage, than it is in...
Had the feeling it would happen soon,
my little pardalis is shedding his skin again, it's been almost 2 months since the last time.
Hope he finishes shedding soon, normally it takes him 2 or 3 days.
Greetz ;)
I use cocopeat for substrate.
Keeps humidity high, and can hold up gallons of water without having puddles.
Never seen a chameleon eat it, and don't think it would harm them if they ate it accidentally...
As long as you don't use repti bark !
Ofcourse if you see them eating it on purpose...
Funny as hell
I've seen it before on youtube :D
Wasn't you now was it ?
Wich of the two is faster,
the reflex to shut your eye or a chameleon tongue?
Haha, my chameleon won't even eat eat locusts out of the freezer. Let alone my eye or fingernails :D
As the plants' roots are everywhere, I can't replace all of the substrate,
I'd damage them too much,
but I don't see why that would be necessary...
I do replace the top layer of the...
