After your sure they are of age and healthy. Watch for colors and see if your female is receptive. you tube has some great videos of this. A female that is not receptive will run away turn dark colors and get angry. A receptive female will just stay still and let the head bobbing male...
If the eggs are not fertile you dont have to do anything with the eggs because they will not hatch. The objective is to keep your female as comfortable as possible so she will lay her clutch and be happy and healthy. I like to put an egg laying site inside the cage where she feels more comfortable
This depends on what species a vieled can handle drier windier conditions then say a mellers. Just make sure you offer plenty of shade and if its too windy they will probably go to the bottum of the cage. Keep them hydrated

Ok sorry im on my cell so I cant attach the pictures another way but this is a 40 aquirium under a custom built oak cage top and sides are screen front is glass that slides out. took a lot of trial and error to dial it in.
I think glass is good just not all around like you said. It can hold in humidity and make your friends more visable I will try to post pics of mine I use glass not plexi glass
I have heard stories of mantids eating out chameleon eyes! Ive never had a problem and I am not sure if it is true but they are a very aggresive insect.
