Hermie came from a small privately owned (not chain) pet store in the saline area. i forget what it is called now. They seemed to take good care of their chams (always had fresh fruits and veggies in their cages with their crickets at any rat). I got him SUPER small (less than 4 inches long)...
no problem!
I do think that it's very interesting that we both have veileds that developed MBD rather rapidly ... without any major husbandry issues ... and both have kidney problems.
Its just normasol. So sterile saline ... what they would use for IV fluids for an animal (or human for that matter). It's just to help keep him extra hydrated, since we can't jsut say "drink more, your kidneys need it"
seems he and hermie are one in the same ... hermie has kidney problems too!
So i would def. recommend pushing some serious fluids on him. my vet has me give hermie fluids subq (so using a needle and put under his skin) 2-3 times daily for at least a week to (a) make sure he is hydrated while...
Also, I had to keep herm in a cage similar to yours ... I lined the bottom of it with a soft towel but not folded nicely ... that way he could grab and hold onto it. He was VERY OCD about needing something to hold onto and having his paws clasped onto something made him feel MUCH better. I also...
Jumping in late here ... life has been crazy ... BUT Hermie (my veiled) had severe MBD and broke each leg in at least one spot ... and his bone density was so bad that we could not even see his legs on xray ... it was a little similar to yours in that the vet couldn't really find major fault in...
Hermie's did the same thing at one point (just slightly lower). The piece eventually fell off on its own, with what does not appear to be any ill side effects. I had been watching his come on for a while ... i noticed that part of his casque didn't appear to have skin/scales on it and thought...
GIve him some time. He'll get used to them. Hermie was scared of the hornworms the first time he saw them as well. Now he comes running when I get in a shipment.
Which wont be happening any time soon with windchills at -20*c.
Hermie took about 6 months to be able to eat and move around on his own and a year to have normal bone density again.
First we just used the liquid calcium from the vet (first six months ... I think it's called gluconate or something) and after that we used weekly D3 injections with the...
If you go into the members gallery and click under "Jam" you can see my boy hermie. I wish I had more pictures (and most of those are of poor quality) but you can see the way his front legs bow out.
Hermie broke all four legs in at least one spot. He broke both hind femurs, his shoulder and...
If you can get her to a vet some subq fluids (i.e. given under her skin so she doesn't have to open her mouth etc.) would probably go a very very long way.
Is there a vet school near you? Vet students tend to make very good pet sitters. Additionally if you have a vet for your cham s/he may know of another client who would be suitable.
I'e noticed this too. A few times a couple years back I added calcium dusting powder directly to my gut load thinking it would "juice up" the calcium content of my crickets
They all died within 48 hours.
Not for a URI but hermie routinely has to have injectable antibiotics for his kidney infections.
They're pretty quick and simple -- easy to do at home if you have to. They should just be going under the skin ... usually around their shoulders is a good place because there's some extra skin...
My veiled hermie has/had those and they were spreading. They were on his joints and tail. Vet said that he sees "other" problems manifest themselves through skin discoloring like that and that often times it is not a real skin condition itself. Ran some blood work which showed that he had a high...
Just to throw this out there ... has s/he pooped lately? I had an impacted female who began digging/pawing when she was impacted. I thought that it she was egg-bound for sure ... but when we took an xray no eggs. Later (unfortunately) she died, and on necropsy there was a large impation.
So Hermie, my 2ish year old cham has suddenly decided that fruits and veggies are good. He has decided dthat he loves apples.... I offered him a piece thinking he would not be interested and next thing I know he's sucking on it and gulp it's gone. Offered him another piece and he snatched it...
Re: getting him to eat. Much of this could have to do with each individual chams personality, but here is what worked for hermie.
I used food that was "stiff" enough that I could sort of pile it on the tip of his mouth ... think ice cream in an ice cream cone. Patience eventually one out, he...
