Tomorrow I am going to set up an appointment for Bert to go to sleep... He is wasting away and I fear that he has something horrible like cancer. With no sizeable improvements despite fluid injections and antibiotics, it hardly seems fair to continue giving him nutrients to sustain this terrible...
wow, I feel like a fool. Upon some internet research (old posts/emails) I have learned that I have been lying this entire time. I brought Bert home on May 11, 2004, making him not 8, but 6-ish
That was snapped a week after coming home... He was about 4" snout to vent. Not sure how old...
I haven't mushed up bugs yet, but I have a recipe saved that I will try. :)
Initially, I only gave 1cc/day on the vet's recommendation but, It's between 2-3 cc/day now. I can't find any "eight cups a day" style recommendations, can they get hyponatremia?
Here are some photos of the old chap. He's lost some of his blue glory, but still looks distinguished in his old age. He's laying on his favorite thing, the faux fur lining out of an old sweater of mine :)
Thank you for your kind words, everyone! We just got back from his appointment and we are taking a more palliative approach. Since he's passed whole food and had diarrhea, we're giving him subcutaneous fluids and a round of injectable antibiotics. It's more or less to improve the bit of life...
:( Ps: When I say "dehydrated due to age and ignorance" I mean that I took his great drinking skills for granted and assumed he would continue with that good habit. *sigh*
Bert is going in for his check up today, he became dehydrated due to age and my own ignorance :( He is 8 years old at least, and has not been doing very well lately.
I am searching high and low for advice, information, anything, and it's really difficult. I did however find this on Senegal...
Let's share some funny stories about our colourful friends!
In the summer I hang a fake plant in the doorway of my patio doors so Bert can get some sun. I guess I didn't open the curtain far enough and he used it as an escape route. In the past the doorway was blocked witha screen, so if he...
I did, and I don't regret a thing! Bert, purchase price-wise, was my most expensive pet to date and I really enjoy taking care of him. Although, I don't doubt that the same would go for a Veiled, as well!
Good luck :)
Yep, I just make sure the water that actually gets to his area is the right temperature; it is a little warmer coming from the tap so by the time it cools on its way, it's perfect.
I usually put mine in the shower for 20-30 minutes; by the end, I usually find him drinking. You just have to check the water often so your hot water doesn't run out, a cold shower would be bad news!
