How to give baby veiled fruit flies

I had the same problem, so I have hit on this procedure: I feed the babies in a separate container, really just a large piece of gladware with a lid. I keep it open a crack for air. And I have a small perch in there, if the baby wants it. The advantages, besides not losing too many flies, is...

how DID you get your cham to hand feed

Based on my experience of the past week or so... you might have better luck starting with babies... if that were an option... they seem quite malleable behaviour-wise - I wish that I had realized this when they first emerged. I might also suggest starting by holding the bug, not in your...

    Chameleon emergency kit

Reptile Xtra ANTI-BACTERIAL MEAL? Looking around I found the above product... would this be safe? Especially in a situation where something like Baytril might be dangerous or impractical?

    newborn jackson chameleon questions

But can they drink TOO much? Besides misting, i have been offering water direct to my neonates. I have learned that over-misting can be fatal. So I trained them to drink out of bottlecaps. When I first gave them the water, they drank, drank drank, it seemed like forever. (I was watching them...

    Green beans, broccoli?

Garlic? Regarding garlic... this came up personally a few days ago, as I wished to give my chameleons a little garlic. I have been concerned about some infection in the nursery, and garlic is anti-bacterial, antiviral. Could not find any food lists recommending against it. Then I noticed that...

    Is this a problem? - Jackson's neonate

Looking for crickets, but I can not find pinheads anyplace around here... they have been getting plenty of flies, though... The container is perhaps not as bad as an aquarium - it does have some ventilation, but not like mesh... nevertheless... apparently I was doing everything that I could...

    Is this a problem? - Jackson's neonate

There is no more foam. I only saw it briefly. But the swollen body, as if distended with air, is a textbook symptom. And I have been probably misting them too much. And I would imagine that the fruit flies are not fortified sufficiently. It is hard to enrich fruit flies, and all of the local...

    Is this a problem? - Jackson's neonate

Great, I think that I just figured it out... this one must have a respiratory infection... now what do I do? Any Jackson's owners in NYC?

    Is this a problem? - Jackson's neonate

10-day old Jackson's - exhibiting gaping, and some foam on mouth. Making some odd movements. Largest of the clutch. Feeds, drinks, alert, some aggression. Torso and head seem disproportionately larger than tail. Cause for concern?

Fruit flies for neonates - how to?

I will try your suggestions. I just had another idea myself... these flies always walk in a bee-line towards a light source... if I shine a light on the opposite end of the container, I should be able to keep them crawling towards the closed end, and tap them out the open one...thanks, guys.

Fruit flies for neonates - how to?

Is there a trick for releasing only a finite number of fruit flies for my neonates? As soon as the jar is open they all rush out... too many get released, and they swarm the neonate! Had to remove the baby back to the main enclosure, and much wastage of food. Any suggestions?

Crude Nutritional Analysis of Various Feeder Foods?

Thank you, this was very helpful. However, no data seems to be supplied for crude fiber. Even in an insect there is some fiber, or roughage, in the form of chitin, etc.... (The various freezedried crustatceans and annelids that I purchase for my fish, turtles, frogs include crude fiber data.)...

    dystocia in live-bearers?

Okay... but a lot of what I am reading suggests that this is actually normal, and that perhaps nothing need be done?

    dystocia in live-bearers?

Wait - how did she get the infection? And if she is carrying more babies (which now seems likely), what can I do? Slugs? And, Oh yeah, aren't they supposed to be ravenous after dropping? I have seen her eat, but not that much...

    dystocia in live-bearers?

I was wondering for a few reasons... Seven is a very small clutch. And some of what I am reading seems to suggest that this may actually be normal, and there could very well be more inside. Also, there still seems to be a little "bulge". If this is normal, how can I tell? And is...

    dystocia in live-bearers?

My female Jackson's dropped 7 pups last Thursday. Is it possible that she is still retaining? She seems fine, she eats. The male and female have been housed together since long before I received them, and seem to be thriving.. The male has been "putting the moves" on the female since the...

    exotic insects for cham

Blackworms? Blackworms are small aquatic worms, kind of like earthworms at pencil=lead thickness. i had some on-hand when the babies arrived unexpectedly, and thought that they might be a good food item. I think maybe a couple did get eaten, then went to fruit flies, not wishing to waste any...
