Agreed. Superworms are not good for staple feeders and should only be fed about once a week. They are not very nutritious, and they also have a hard outer shell that can cause impactions.
Silkworms and hornworms are better options for tasty feeders that are not as bad for chameleons. You...
Ok, I will soak him today.
I don't really think it's that he's having trouble finding the crickets - he's just not interested in them. He ignores them even when they walk right in front of his face.
I don't have a 20L, but I do have a 15 gallon. That is what I had him in until pretty...
Thanks for the advice. :)
Out of curiosity, what is the purpose of soaking him? He's not impacted and he's well-hydrated. I do notice the occasional yellow/orange tinge in my chams' urates indicating dehydration (rarely), but I have never seen anything less than pure white urates from my...
Ok, great. Thanks guys. I will definitely suggest to my store that we start feeding the diet as a staple, and I will relay all this great information to any future customers I have who purchase a crestie. :)
So is the crested gecko diet the best staple feeder, or are insects ok as a staple? Currently, we are only feeding our crestie crickets (dusted with calcium with D3).
Thanks - I will check out those sites. :)
It has never pooped on me before, but I haven't ever properly held it. It always freaks out when I touch it, so I've only held onto it enough to move into a critter keeper when I clean the enclosure, and then back into the enclosure.
Congrats on your new addition. Can we see pictures? :)
Edit: I'm also glad to see that you saved him, but bought the stuff you needed for him elsewhere. I think that was the best decision. :)
I didn't mean to sound critical - I apologize if it seemed like I was trying to make you feel bad. I just wanted to point out that wild chams don't always adjust well to being in captivity.
Welcome to the forums, by the way. This really is a great place to learn about chameleons, and we're glad...
The sand is playsand.
I know the picture is blurry - it's the best I could get. I can see a separate white strand of urates in the poop, so I don't think it's a mass of urates.
He does sit under the light a lot, which is why I think he's too cold.
I'm not sure if I was clear about my...
Yes, the temps are too cool. I haven't gotten him a higher wattage bulb yet because I was trying to reason with my roommate about keeping the heat on in our apartment, but it doesn't look like she's going to budge. I will get him a hotter bulb today.
Good point though - it didn't cross my...
I have no hate toward you or your pets. On the contrary, I am happy to know that both of your chams are doing well, as I'm sure most forum members are. Do you really think we would want your chams to be suffering just to prove a point?
On the other hand, I don't think you understood what I...
I should also mention that I offer a lot more than he's been eating, but he just lets the crickets run free. I've tried crickets of all sizes and he is equally uninterested. I even offered a waxworm yesterday, which he used to love, but he wouldn't take it.
Your Reptile - Bearded dragon, 14 weeks old, 4 inches snout to vent (9.5 with tail), unsure of sex (should I be able to tell yet?), in my care almost 2 months
Handling - Often
Feeding - Crickets, occasional waxworms, veggies. Crickets gutloaded with fresh veggies and Fluker's dry gutload...
I work at a pet store. I have another thread going right now to request info about the different animals I work with that I was previously unfamiliar with. I wanted to start a separate thread for cresties though, because I know of several forum members that have them and I figured that a thread...
Of course hand-feeding is likely to help, but I also agree that avoiding sudden movements and making sure your hands are warm before attempted to touch your chameleon are very important. You don't want to scare or shock them.
Ok, great. In that case, I think the most important thing for you to do is raise the temps. I also recommend dusting the crickets with plain calcium most days, and use Miner-all more like once every other week. They don't need all the extra vitamins in Miner-all every day.
As far as I can...
When you say 77-79 "under the bulb," do you literally mean under the bulb, or are those the temps at their actual basking spot? I also agree that 77-79 isn't quite warm enough, especially if it's not even that warm in the plants where the babies should be spending most of their time.
Wild chameleons are best left in the wild. If possible, the best thing to do would be to return it where you found it. If you're not going back to Zimbabwe anytime soon, here are a couple of links to give you some basic info on how to care for the chameleon...
How often do you clean out the bins? Since the plastic bins retain water and you mist often, it is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Baby chams are very sensitive to that.
