Yikes! thats quite a heart attack! I would check up high! Chameleons are arboreal and will feel most safe in high places. I also heard about shining a light around your home at night.. that their PJs can reflect or something like that.
I do believe seeing various palladiums using expandable foam with no issues. I want to see where you saw leeching of chemicals was a concern... Dr plants made a Vampire crab palladium and he does updates on it. Maybe check that out for a idea.
