I've really enjoyed reading this thread, though it is a little stale at this point.
I am still at a minimum months away from getting my FIRST EVER chameleon, let alone beginning to contemplate a breeding program, but I won't say that it hasn't crossed my mind from time to time, especially as I...
Yes!!!!! I looooooove the weird bulbophyllums! Is this one B. fascinator, by chance? Does it have a bad smell? I guess if chams don't have sensitive noses, it all works out well. I didn't know the anti-cancer thing about dendrobiums. I assume they have to be eaten to help with that?
You have a...
That is beautiful! What are the dimensions of the viv? Also, what kind of nepenthes is it, do you know?
I'd be interested in doing a planted wall in a large enough viv, with butterworts, sundews and cephalotus planted on the side. If the viv was wide enough, branches and stuff could be moved...
That cage looks amazing. Can I ask what the cage itself is, or did you build the whole thing from scratch? Love that Monet has a bed AND is a stickler for bedtimes.
Do you have the orchids in your cham enclosure? I have this dream that I'll have this set-up that magically works for all my orchids, my ariums and bromeliads and other plants AND a chameleon and then all my care is combined into just cham maintanance, basically. I'm sure it's not that easy, though.
Nice! Do you have the dews and butterworts growing on vertical surfaces or in the substrate on the bottom of the cage? If they are dewy enough to make effective flypaper, that means they're getting enough light which makes me wonder where they are in your enclosure and how strong your lights...
I have various sundews species, butterworts, one bladderwort, asian and north american pitcher plants, darlingtonia and a requisite venus flytrap. I'm pretty new to these, too (about a year or so), but I have found them easy to care for--they just want lots of light and to have wet feet. They do...
Yes, cats have a special genius for mischief. I've so far managed to successfully cat-proof my tanks and carnivorous plant grow light set up, but you can never be too careful.
Yes! It is awesome having people on hand to cover for me with the plant and animal care. My plant routine is a little...
The food bit is definitely an advantage. It is also fairly cheap rent (but not the cheapest), but considering the size of the common space and location in town, it is indeed a very good deal.
I understand that IC's (intentional communities) are unfamiliar and strange to most Americans. That's why I've been over-explaining things. I'm used to people not "getting it". But then folks come and visit us and they usually get it after that. It's not a lifestyle for everyone, but I think...
Yes: for some weird reason, my original post contained a copyasted portion of a post from a different thread! (It must've happened when I put the link there) and you responded to that.
Sorry for the confusion! This thread was just supposed to be about the film.
Thanks for the feedback. I'm not decided one way or the other, but I certainly see the points some people have made here and am taking it all into consideration, plus talking to others.
I'm not that concerned about the cats. I really just wanted to know if the sight of cats would bother a cham...
We raise chickens and in the past (not now) worms for our garden and do extensive composting. I doubt anyone would be bothered by me raising bugs in our detached garage or some other location, but it would be one other thing to discuss with them.
Update: Heard back from Fabian Aguirre, who seems to be familiar to some folks around here, that the project is on-going and he's not sure when he'll be done with a long form. Just the 15 sec clip on this link, tho, is fantastic. Chameleons are such amazing lifeforms, and to see them behaving in...
Those cages look really nice! I'm sure you'll enjoy the podcast.
I hope the lil guy calms down a bit--or that your worries about him settle out after awhile. As for worry about having to handle him to get to the vet, Bill actually has an episode just on how to handle an angry cham lol! I can...
Wow, sorry he's so prickly. And sorry you felt misled! On the other hand, it's six months and maybe the little guy still feels like he's adjusting.
I DONT KNOW chams, but having a bit of experience with other animals, I wonder if the situation might be helped by moving his cage away from your...
I sent out this request to the FB group, WWPCK, but thought I'd post here. Has anyone heard of/seen the short doc "Miniature Dragons" by The Understory Films?
Link: http://www.theunderstory.co/miniaturedragons
Thanks everyone! I do appreciate people's responses. I'm not happy to hear some of the things, true, but also I asked because I wanted to know. So, I appreciate it!
To clarify, there are parts of my house where the cats can't get into without human help and where we have rules that they aren't...
Doh! I'm not sure the loooong message I just posted was as a reply to you. I'm not used to this forum, apparently.
To add to my rambling message: I hope I didn't sound defensive--or like I'm going to get a chameleon, regardless. I just want to make sure that your advice NOT to get a chameleon...
