I would recommend removing the wood chips, it is not recommended and some of the members will rip you out for that (Substrate can cause impaction) . Just use the carpet-like material that you can buy in pet stores, I personally use that and find it to work very well. If you need humidity live...

Some clear coat should work fine. Just apply it and maybe sand it well so there is no flakes and keep an eye on it.
