I agree that you should read everything out there, and read it again, matching what you read about from one source with another and another. Once you learn what the general husbandry requirements are, you have to begin to find out what works for you, and for your individual cham. If you had...
I offer Butter a salad a couple days a week. His main feeder is silkworms, so I put a couple pieces of dark greens in his bowl, shred some carrots, and add what ever fruit is around (just a shred or two of something). I stick the silkworms on top of it, and he picks off the silkies, and then...
Once I could get silk worms again, Butter started chowing down. Absolutely NO interest in crickets. I ended up dumping a few in the garden...as Butter refuses to even look at them.
Veileds like a salad from time to time. Dark greens and even finely cut fruit and vegies. I often place Butter's silkworms on a bed of dark greens with some shredded carrots or apples. I lightly dust the whole thing with his vits, and he eats it all. The silk worms will not do well eating...
I am so sorry to hear about your sick chams. Have you figured out what went wrong? I'm always reading here to improve my husbandry techniques. We all can learn from each other, even from each other's mistakes.
My daughter claims that I spend more time preparing food for/taking care of the critters than I do anything else. I tell her that SHE is capable of making her own breakfast, the dogs, lizard, bunny, and bird cannot......
Most chameleons, especially veileds will not tolerate being held as adults. Chameleons are not like a domesticated dog or cat, chameleons are not companion pets.
Reptile Depot has an actual store in southern California. To tell you the truth, when I have been in there (purchased my cham there) and been back on occasion, most of the staff appear to be rather youthful, and more interested in doing their own thing, rather than help customer.
Given...
Good article. Thank you for posting it. Conservation of natural habitat should be an important priority for those of us interested in animal husbandry.
I have had Butter since he was about 3 weeks old. He has a "dip" in his casque in the front, kind of like a dimple. About 3/4 the way up. He has had good supplementation, a varied diet, plenty of uvb. It isn't discolored, he is a veiled 6 months old. He has always had it, when he was little...
I handled Butter form day 1, when he was about 3 weeks old. He probably tolerated me out of fear then, but now, with his big boy bravado, is fine letting me know that he hates me.
He tolerates me as a feeding machine. Yes, if he is interested in what I have in my hand, he will tolerate me...
I feed my veiled greens about every other day. I make him a nice salad of dark greens with some shredded carrot, sliced squash, sliced apple....whatever is in the house. I then toss a couple silk worms on it, and he has a lovely salad. I also toss his crickets in the salad bowl, and they stay...
My veiled's night time temp is right between 58 and 60 Farenheit. I use a ceramic heat emitter to keep the temp to that at night. (Our house is on the cold side during the winter !)
