Pinky mice are a good source of protien for animals. We have fed out Frozen Thawed pinkies but only to wild caught animals that we feel could use the extra meat. I wouldnt consider this an ever week habit or feeding them just for the sake of watching them eat a pinky. But like I said its a good source of protien if you have a thin cham. Good Luck im sure other forum members will jump in and help you out on this.

I've never fed a pinky to any of my chams before but I really don't see a huge problem with it. I'd just recommend you to do it very very sparingly. Maybe one every 3 months or so.

I have seen some pretty cool videos on youtube showing chams eating pinkies. I think my wife would have my a_s if I did that.

hey i have a friend who has a half oustalets half panther mix. He brought her into work one time and she ate two pinkies in one sitting!!!! and she was stilll hungry. She was a tank. and its not like we had to convince her when she saw it she wanted it hahah

"Gout is not uncommon in chameleons that are fed pinky mice on a constant basis or crickets that have been gut loaded solely with high protein foods like cat or dog food."

Hopefully Ivan can come and post here and define "constant" basis, and differentiate between the mice, dog and cat food gutloaders.

I have not noticed any signs of gout or MBD in any chams that have had a one a month diet of pinkies. I would like to hear his opinion on what constant means.

thanks in advance ivan!!!

thank you evryone i think i might try giving him a pinky i would like his head so swell up a little

i hate the owner who had him befor me she did not feed him nor did she even calcium her crickets very bad

so evry how long should he be given a pinky 1 time a month ?

Just have to question the 1/2 oustalets 1/2 panther.
Is this even possible?

-Brad

It is possible; however, there babies will be infertile an most likely a very high mortality rate within the first 3 months.

Pretty much like a zebra and donkey mating. Possible but would not be able to produce viable offspring, which is essentially how some species are determined. Those similar animals who can not produce viable offspring but can produce offspring generally must be classified as different species.

i'm gonna go with why would you even want to in the first place?? personally i just don't see any good reason for it.

so they are high in protein, but come on now... do we really need it? you can easily get enough protein and enough variety for a good healthy diet by providing healthy and properly gutloaded feeder insects... and i highly doubt that a live pinky is going to be as easy / easier to digest as any insect you would otherwise feed. is there supposed to be any real advantage? what's the logic?? because i don't see any reason to do it other than to watch your cham eat a pinky, which i think we all agree is a pretty stupid reason by itself. :p

in the book (c 2007) "Chameleons: Care and Breeding of Jackson's, Panther, Veiled, and Parson's" by Gary Ferguson, Kenneth Kalisch, and Sean McKeown (no, i don't know who any of them are, but they wrote a book on chams so they must know more than me.. :p lol) there is only one mention of pinky mice in the whole book. they mentioned feeding 1 or 2 times monthly, only for parson's, only during the summer months. so who knows about other species?? it might be ok, but a healthy variety of insects will for sure be ok, so that's what i will be stickin with :D

correct but the flesh has plenty of proten and i herd is very good for him

no way im not going to feed it a pinky just to make myself feel better or just so i can see him eat it im doing it for my cham if it is good for him i will feed it to him

oh yea... IF it is good for them, but i don't think we will be getting a really definitive answer on this one anytime too soon ;)

I do see an advantage in great calcium (cartilidge and bones) and preformed vitamin A. I also believe that in a natural environment chameleons are going to run across the occasional, appropriately sized vertebrate and consume it.
However, I think I'm going to stick to my supplementation schedule, dark leafy greens, and insects. So far it's working great for us and if it aint broke.....:)

Did you know VOSJOLI wrote books on just about every captive animal, but that is not the point of this response.

Your comment about the only reason to feed one is for the pleasure of seeing a chameleon eat a mouse is just plain ridiculous.

Do you seriously think someone gets arousal from feeding 30+adult chams a mouse every single month @ around a buck a piece for a live mouse?

Stop wasting your time on you tube, and visit the forum bookstore!!!!

I think a random pinkie mouse is a lot closer to mimicking a WC diet rather than crickets gut-loaded with god knows what.

Sorry for the rant, but I am feeling a bit perturbed after moving tons of animals back home from school for Thanksgiving break(including a massive silkworm and hornworm project!!!!)
