Sounds like your friend should have researched chameleons more. I see more aggressive ones the calm ones. Consider it a sign of it being healthy.
Look don't touch. The best physical interaction you can have with your chameleon as stated before is hand feeding.
Dogs like to be handled though!
The grandis are so cool looking though. I suppose I could do a similar plan as yours and just use it for a baby cage then upgrade to a nice roomy screen cage. Not like they are expensive or anything.
