Hemipenes and sperm deposits

They look like this! Yesterday when Monty was pooping, both his hemipenes came out, so I thought it was a good opportunity to get a photo. Sadly, it's a bit blurry due to lighting and his position, but it still shows their location and colour! This is new to me as I never saw Tommy's and I can understand how new owners may be alarmed when they first see them. As long as they tuck them back inside after then all is good!



You can also see a small sperm deposit on his right hemipenis. That is also completely normal. You may find them on a branch after the chameleon has finished pooping - they poop and wipe their vents on the branch or whatever they are sitting on as they walk away. The other day, Monty left me a perfect example that consists of a deposit from each of the hemipenes which were joined together. Sometimes they are expelled with the poop and you may not notice the, but other times they will be wiped on a branch for you to see! When exposed the the air the sperm deposit quickly dries up, shrivels and goes hard and crispy, rather like a bogey! Hence why I refer to them as 'Monty's man bogies'!

I know of only one other pic of a hemipenes, and its of a panther, so this is a good thing.

See I am not the only one who thought this is a good thread for new people. You have to give it to Monty, that cham has given lots to the forum. Watching him grow, all the things you have documented, you might want to consider a blog of Monty growing, shedding, and all the other things from eating to flashing. That would be priceless to a new owner of a small jackson. jmo

Thanks! I only knew what to expect from looking at threads on here and they are usually of prolapsed hemipenes and don't show how they look when normal and healthy.

Thanks Laurie! As you know I have been taking photos of him every month and will be putting them all together once he gets to a year old. He also gets weighed every other week too, something that i didn't do with Amy when she was growing up. I have so much info that I have documented and it comes in handy sometimes when helping other people.

Lol! I wonder myself sometimes, but I love chams so much everything about them is fascinating! I did ask Laurie first if she thought it was a good idea! I like to get unusua pics that other people may not think to get, such as the bum shot (I love his wrinkly bum, lol) and the hemipenes shot. Just wish it had come out more in focus.

It is sperm, and I have just found a new "pair" of sacs like one of the photos depicts on the back screen panel.

Miss Lily - now I know what those crusties are on my male panther's vines! His man bogies!! Great shot of the hemis - I have yet to see either for my two. My vet saw my Melleri's somehow - they are sure strange looking.

Very interesting! I freaked out the first time Leo had a sperm plug sticking out. Man boogies sound way cuter tho He's flashed his hemipene once or twice, but never both at the same time!

New photos!

A few days ago Monty kindly presented me with another photo opportunity! He pooped right at the front of his cage with his back to me. I watch hime so closely, and often I know the signs that he is about to poop - he will pace the top of his cage for a while just before he poops. Usually he just sits still in one place or other, so I know when he keeps pacing what is coming next!

These latest pics are more in focus and show various stages of elimination - the first is as he starts to poop, the second shows a bit of urate and fluid bubble and tha last shows him mid-poop! No privacy in my house!

Ha! Those are great shots! This thread is great because loads of people see it and think they're hurt or prolapsing. Monty isn't shy is he

Thanks! Monty is a little show off, bless him! Definitely not shy, lol! My old boy Veiled never got his man bits out so until I got Monty I had only read about it on here. It is easy to see how people can think they are prolapsing. It all tucks back in quite quickly after though, thankfully!

Thanks for sharing these! I had Kosby out the other day - he was on my arm, but my arm was over my bed. All of a sudden my arm felt wet - I looked down to see him pooping on both my arm and my bed Following that was something mysterious that I guessed was a sperm plug and you have confirmed it - thanks, now I know that 9 month old Kosby is a man!

Is this more predominant in a panther than a veiled....or does it even matter, and at what age do they start showing off?.....mine is only 5 months old,so I'm assuming he is still too young.....as for the photos, those are some fascinating images, great shots.
