My female some how ripped/bit her tounge off...I'm extremely UPSET...if you couldnt tell..I'm bringing her into my Vet around 12:30...She seems okay...I see her every now and then..sticking her appendage sp? out..not sure what shes trying to do?? Any Ideas is helpful...Anything I can do in the mean time before I leave for the vet??

Was it your manish female? Thats sucks man! Ive had that happen to a gravid veiled some months back. She didnt bite it all off but enough that it all had to be removed. I lost her... Wasnt happy but shit happens. Ive read that they can live without there tounges it just take a bit for them to get use to eating like a regular lizard. Goodluck hope she make it!!!!

yeah its my he/she cham.. :( she seems to be okay, i'm sure shes in SHOCK..but other wise..okay for the most part...for those of you who had chams totally rip off there tounge..and brought them to the vet..and have a happy ending, what did your vets do for your chams?? any info is helpful!!

I had a jacksons that ended up losing his tongue unfortunately it was several years ago. I remember the vet gave me some kind of liquid (Don't remember the name) to put in his mouth once a day. I believe the purpose of the liquid was just to clean his mouth out to prevent infection. Pre-losing his tongue I was letting him hunt for his own food, but he adjusted to being hand feed very fast.

oh okay..I'll have to search more on here to see if theres anything else on this issue...to see what the vets do in this situation.. :(

Kayla, I hope your little girl will be ok. I've read threads on here before where the cham lost his tounge. Keep up udated after the vet.

OMG! thats horrible :( i would freak out 2 if that happened to me! i hope she ends up ok!! i wish you both best of luck! definately let us know what the vet says!

Okay, I just got back from the Office...Unfortunatley there's nothing we can do about her tounge...She bit the Entire thing off..I Still Have It..Not sure if everyone here wants to see it..unattached.. :( Anyways, We gave her Sub-Q Fluids..and an Injection of baytril to prevent any infection..I start giving her Oral baytril tomorrow with baby food "Baytril Burns The Mouth" this will also help her tounge to heal...I brought her inside, I will put her back outside once she's better. I'm also going to give her warm Showers every night..If you have any other ideas on what can help her, let me know! Also..for feeding..She dosnt want me to give her anything untill tomorrow night...I thought about smashing up some supers and crix and feeding them through a syg for a few days..then showing her how to dish feed..Good Idea? If you have any others let me know! Positive Thoughts Are Key :) Wish Us Luck...oh yeah, I also wanted to let you guys know shes doing pretty well, color is okay a little on the darker side, but okay, she's been moving about her cage since this happened...she occasionally opens her mouth with her appendage sp? bone sticking out, but puts it back in...she seems unsure what to do with it..but I think it just feels weird to her...

oh my gosh, your poor cham and poor you! I am curious as to how you think or maybe the vet told you, how a cham could bite off their own tongue.? Is their a reason for this? Did she shoot at something and it got stuck and it ripped out do you think? That is just horrible and i pray for you that she will learn to eat without her tongue. Please keep us updated.

I honestly have no idea...She could have shot it out to get a crix or roach, she could have gotten her tounge wrapped around a vein?? But when I woke up I just found her like that..Ahh, I'm sure she will be okay, I beileve every cham can learn to dish feed. Ha My male veiled eats close range bugs..He almost never shoots his tounge..he can if you hold it far enough from him, but he likes to get the close ones..cheater..but we'll see how she does these next few days..

im a christian so i will pray for you and your little girl.

father, i just lift up this he/she cham up to you, i believe that you are a healer, and i thank you that recovery is under way. i just ask that you guide the vet's future recommendations, that you will allow her to continue eating a drinking, slowly but surley, i thank you that this little animal of yours will be healed. also lift up the owner to you, that you give them peace and assurity that everything will turn out better than thought. i ask this in Jesus' name amen.

hey man, did your vet tell you to dilute the baytril? also i have heard and read tons about a diet of baby food fed to other fuit eating lizards like geckos, ends up bad in the long run. um... i dont want to at all change the doc's recommendations or mislead you at all. but repashy along with your regular supplimentations added to it might be alittle bit better and healthier for the cham. if you want, call your vet tomorrow and ask him if Crested Gecko Diet is alright in replacement of baby food.

blessins man, keep us up to date

wow....sorry :(
ive never heard of a chameleon doing that before..
or i dont know why the chameleon would bite their own tongue off in the first place.
sorry:(

KShook...you said that it puts the hyoid spike (bone the tongue sits folded up on) out....is there any flap of tongue/skin left at the end of it or do you just see the rounded end of the bone??

ya the baytril will be diluted with baby food...I'm not giving her baby food as her diet..I'm going to crush/smash up crix and worms and syg feed her for a few days, then try to dish feed her later on

nope there's no skin left..just the round tip..when I get home I'll take a pic of her tounge...not attached :(

The vet should have sutured any remaining tissue over the bone. Or if there wasn't any to cover the hyoid bone, maybe the bone should have been removed and the hole sutured closed. I don't have any knowledge dealing with the removal of hyoid bones. Never had it done.
