Do chameleons hear?

While cleaning I blasted, at a reasonable volume, it was loud but not blearing; some Music Choice SoundScape, to fill my home with relaxing, calming vibes and peacful energy. I fed Kilo a few crickets, turned up the music and he turned such beauitful colors, he put his head on the branch and rested his eyes until i started to vacume, so i shut the door. But does anyone know?

Anyone call their chams name and them know?

Weird question :p

also our dog barks when wer're not home, could he hear that/stress him out?

Clearly no. They have no external ear. They have an inner ear though which I think reacts to vibration mainly. If you consider this hearing then yes.

Maybe a strong bass blast of a speaker can confuse it.

I noticed they had no external ear; these creatures have yet to not amaze me, so them being able to hear wouldn't of shocked me. Maybe he felt the energy in the room.

Thank you for your answer; you Cham is very pretty :)

They are amazing indeed. Yet they are also super fragile (which stresses me out a lot especially as I am traveling a lot). They are for sure not an easy pet. But once they flourish and give you their prettiest colors it is very rewarding and beautiful.

chams "hear" thru vibrations, like im pretty sure all reptiles do. so when you have the music on, they "hear" or rather feel the different sound vibrations given off by the music. when you walk by, they feel the vibrations :) i was told when i got my snake to keep the music at a decent volume, not shaking the house, and the bass turned down so that it wouldnt disturb the reptiles too much :D

thats real beauitful!! I have really seen my Chameleons colors start to change, sure I'm only seeing the begining :) I'm sure he's taken care of well :)

Ive heard they can hear between 200-500hz, which is about the range of a snare drum or low vocals
wow thats really cool, ill talk to Kilo in a low voice (i have high pitch voice so yikes... no low voice hahaha)

thats cool, i weight alot so im sure he hears me walking and running around haha. He probably hears the heat kick on and off too!

Chameleons do not have external ear openings, a typical round window or a standard tympanic membrane, however they do have a functional inner ear, a functional equivalent to the round window and some species have modifications to the pterygoid plate that functions as a tympanic membrane. As a result, their hearing is limited, however they are able to hear both aerial sounds and mechanical vibrations. Species that lack the modified pterygoid plate that functions as a tympanic membrane have poorer sensitivity to aerial sound, however.

So, which cham species has the modified pterygoid plate ?
And what exactly do you mean by aerial sounds? Like, sound vibrations in the air?

Only Chamaeleo and Trioceros species have been examined, to the best of my knowledge, and these studies indicate that Chamaeleo species have the modified pterygoid plate while Trioceros species do not. By aerial sounds, I mean sound waves that travel through the air, as opposed to through substrates.

So if I talk to Noogie in a low enough voice, he can hear me?? (in theory)

Oops, I think I got that backwards!!
