Death of a female panther-Warning Necropsy photo

I had a sad day yesterday, my female panther that I hatched from an egg died. She was 9 months old and was bred on 12-6-08. I noticed after they mated (which lasted about 15 minutes) a pool of blood on the bottom of the cage and drops on the plants. The male was bleeding from his vent and the female also had blood dripping from her vent. I seperated them and they both acted normal. He put all his stuff away with no swelling and she stopped dripping. We searched the forum and found a thread of how the male can injure himself and there can be bleeding. The male is fine and had a normal poop a few days later. She acted normal and turned gravid colors. She only ate sparingly which gravid females can do and drank like a fish. She never pooped during this time, but she wasn't eating much and she only pooped once a week normally. She moved to her basking spot daily and cruised around her cage everyday until yesterday. Yesterday AM she had her eyes closed and they were sunken in like in the first photo-actually the first photo is from 7pm and that's how she looked that morning-like death. I sprayed her with warm water and she drank, but was keeping her eyes closed. She moved around the cage during the day, but was discovered dead later. My dad is here for xmas and is a retired vet so we did a necropsy right away. When he cut her open, her whole body cavity was full of pus, it just poured out. He suspects peritonitis. Her intestinal tract was intact, so we think she was torn during the mating and infection set in. Dad thinks that had I put her on antibiotics right away, she might still be alive, but who would have thought? There were no eggs, the uterus was black and necrotic. I'm sorry for the grafic pictures, but I wanted to share this info in case it can help someone in the future, and so we can learn from peoples experiences.

Are you positive that is pus and not yolk? It looks extremely bright yellow and even in tone.

I am sorry for your loss :( I hate losing chams.

Yellow indicates white blood cells I believe. Like how your snot turns yellow when you're sick. It's definately a sign he body was fighting something.

Sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Its so hard losing a pet.

The yellow stuff looks like egg yolk to me too. Any time I've seen infection in chameleons it looks different than that. Did the male bite her on the side at all during the mating??

I am sorry for your loss, but thanks for posting. I have never seen that before but Stacey tells me many times peritonitis is caused from people with liver problems, and occasionally from bacteria (an infection like you said). She says signs in humans are bloated stomaches, weakness, nausea and vomiting. It doesn't look like the puss is coming from the liver...at least not that side so you I think you are probably right. She got an infection from the mating. That would also be tough to catch as after mating you would expect bloating of the stomach. Again, sorry but thanks for the photos and information.

No, He didn't bite her. She had clawmarks on one side, but superficially. Thanks for all the sympathy-we'll miss her, she was quite the charactor.

:(

Sorry to hear about your loss. Your story made me sad... your story is pretty much a step by step of what happened to my girl. She looked just like yours. It was like I was reading and seeing my own story. Kinda of weird....

What I found out in the necropsy on my girl was the same as yourself: full of yellow fluids, which the vet determined was egg yolk. I'm sorry for your loss and thanks for sharing your info and pictures.

Howdy Tylene,

Sorry to hear about your panther :(. I too, remember when you got her, still in the egg. That sure looks like one heck of an infection. This is probably a good example of how well chameleons hide troubles until it is too late.

I`m so sorry - what an awful thing to have happen. :( I certainly shall not forget your warning i had no idea this could happen.
