Thought I would post some pictures of a pair of captive bred Senegals that have been breeding as well. Maybe it can be a new start to not having to import them since it can be done.

Could I ask why they are on the bare bottom? :( They don't look very healthy. Can you fill this out please?
I think they may have MBD, but hopefully some more experience members will chime in.

Chameleon Info:

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about.

I dont put substrate on the floors of my cages at all. Just leads to trouble. Chance of mildew, mold, fungus, to easy for feeders to hide in and hav issues with ingesting the substrate. I also dont put them in each others cages when I breed them. I use am extra Screen cage with potted plats and branches in it. I find it much female aggression and stress if I do it this way. No they dont have any thing wrong with them. The male was just so aggressive during breeding that he knocked them both off of the branches they were on.

I've seen some Senegals (most in captivity) that look like hell warmed over,....those actually don't look too shabby,...

Very supportive gang....

That's awesome! You don't see Sengals breeding very often so hopefully you will get some babies from them! I agree with the bare flooring as being more sanitary as well, and that's generally what is recommended. Now that they've bred, nutrition of the female is paramount to be able to get healthy eggs to lead to healthy babies! She'll need extra calcium in addition to tiptop nutrition. Hopefully she has her own cage to retire to and gravid females don't tolerate the male being close by and can be very easily stressed by it. Time to set up the laying bin! Keep us updated if she lays eggs or not. :)

P.S. I see no evidence of MBD and I agree with jdog that they do not look like they are in poor health from those pictures.

Thank you, I take pride in being able to say I have never had a case of MBD in any of my personally raised hatchlings or long term adults I have kept. But I give credit to Sticky tongues Calcium.

Have any pictures of the babies? I'm interested in how small they are as newly hatchlings.

I will have to look on my other laptop but I know there are members here that have some of the babies and had pictures as well. They are a little smaller then veileds when hatching out.

That is awesome!

They look fine to me, not that I'm an expert or anything but I really like Senegals, I own one, and I go out of my way to check any out that are around or pics or articles.

Is the pair that is mating related? I was a little confused about that.

If they are not put me on the list for babies! I really want a cb female and they are near impossible to find.

These are from two different pairs that laid eggs that I bought as wild caught adults. Got the two pair out of 7 I bought and each laid eggs after having them for a year. After hearing all the talk about how hard or not worth it it is to breed captive bred Senegals I took it as a challenge and decided to put some young that I raised together and this pair I put together this week and BAM. I am excited to have captive bred Senegals breed and have second generation captive breds. I think the trick is to have extra aggressive males to keep those wild girls under control lol.

very nice. keep me in mind if you have any cb females who need a home!

Here is a good article with lots of breeding info:

I think it isn't as hard as most make it out to be, the problem is that it isn't profitable! ha haa

I would like to pick your mind on the breeding though. Like at what temps did you incubate? how many eggs were laid versus how many hatched? Pretty much anything about the experience! I intend to follow suit and would love all the info I can get, there isn't much.

I will keep you in mind for the next female available. Thanks for the info. I incubated them at 78 degrees, had 16 eggs and 15 hatched and 14 made it just fine. I guess i will just have to keep breeding them and holding on to them until they cant import any more and then sell them for Millions just like all those mellers that are so easy to find lol.

You will have a market here! Many people would rather pay much much more for a healthy CB over a sickly WC. You've done an amazing job getting the originals healthy enough to lay, and raising babies to breeding age is awesome! Senegals have so many wonderful qualities to recommend them over even Panthers or Veileds, you will have no trouble finding homes.

And I can't be the only one in love with the shagging colours of the male! He looks like an orchid! Beautiful!

The guy looks pretty exhausted. Maybe he had a few beer too many before getting after her. Seriously, congrats and thanks for the pictures.
