Aloha Everyone,
New to this forum or any forum for that matter. Browsing the internet to find out where I could find some Baby Jackson's?? Came across this site and found it very informative and interesting. So I thought I would give it a shot.
Recently came back from my home town Honolulu and once again brought back with me 3 Jacksons. Even though I told myself before we left that I wouldn't (Did this last year).. Couldn't pass this deal up,nothing better then free!!! Beats going to look for them myself after sun goes down.. Use to do this a lot when we were kids.. Now once again I wasn't prepared for the new additions along with the 1 male that I have left from Last Year (lost the other 2, long story!!) But the cool thing was that the Female that I brought back last year gave birth to 14 babies (gave them away)..
If anyone wants the scoop on getting Jackson's when in Oahu let me know? If you want go hiking for them or just buy them let me know, My friend sells them from $6-$10 depending on the size. I'll Just give him a call and he can go get you some...
Aloha and Mahalo for the time!!:)

Make sure you get those WC chams checked for parasites. How did you get them back to the mainland? What other islands can chameleons be found on? I've been to the island of Maui a bunch.

Aloha,
Sorry Don't know where the spots are on Maui. But My Friend just got back from Maui and bought a pair at a pet store there. He just sent them through Fedex Overnight. The thing is he didn't tell them what he was shipping. If you go to Maui Cehck out Paia on the weekends their should be kids still selling them on the side of the road...

Hawaii Jackson's to Mainland

You guys ready to know how to bring Jackson's to the mainland?
First of all I wouldn't suggest going hiking to go look for them yourself. I know JC's aren't native to hawaii and their eating native insects and bugs that certain native plants need to get pollinated by but I wouldn't want anyone to go off the hiking paths to look for JC's and destroy those plants. Even though you can find them on the side of the road on a bush. I think thats one of the concerns of Hawaii's DLNR (Dept of Land and Natural Resources) That's just one of the reasons. I know theirs a lot more concerns... But will just leave it at that because I can go on and on about why and why not to open up exporting JC's from Hawaii...
Enough about that.. Here we go.
*Obtaining a permit is easy. Its the same place that you would get a hunting or camping license in hawaii, 10mins. Its good to get the permit to be safe If agriculture ask at the airport. I think the max is 4 for personal use, per household, per lifetime. 15 for educational purposes.
*Going through Agriculture at the airport is really easy, specially if you have that permit with you.
*The airlines is the problem!!!!! Most all Airlines will not let you bring them on the plane or sometimes not let you check them in unless you have a good bill of health from a Vet. And sometimes that doesn't work even with Permits.
* This is what I do Acquire permit. Put JC's in some kind of tube (Toilet paper tube) Its better to put them in something that limits their movement so they don't get banged around (learn this managing a Pet Store). Stuck them in Cargo Pants Pocket. If Security check point ask, That's if they ask show them the paper work and let them know that it's to keep them warm. But you shouldn't set the alarms off not unless your concealing weapons or metal. Don't put them through X-ray machine with your carry ons. once on Plane, if you want you can put them in a small pet box (same kind you get at the pet store when you bring small pets home) and then put the box in your carry on. Might want to do this in the lavatory.
Hope this helps. Any other scoops let me know

my question is , which airlines allow you to bring back chams ?, without a consenting airline the permit is useless, to do it without the permit or notifying the airlines constitututes illegal interstate tranport of reptiles, and is a federal offense, and possibly subject to fines in excess of $10,000

Hawaii Jackson's to Mainland

United and Alaskan will fly chameleons out of Honolulu only. Hawaiian airlines does not fly reptiles at all.
Call DIVISION OF FORESTRY AND WILDLIFE in Honolulu for the permit you need, it's free.
What I am researching...
I'm wanted to fly from Kona to San Francisco. I can fly my chameleons out of Honolulu only (on a different island). Does anyone know how I can fly them from Kona to Honolulu?
Aloha ~

the permit applies only to flying jackson's OFF of the islands, according to hdnr , it is illegal to transport jackson's between the islands by any means.

These animals must be inbred from a small group of Jacksons. Has anyone noticed any defects with wc Hawaian Jacksons?

natural selection of the fittest

Yes there have been mutants noted, both by collectors and in the scientific investigations; check the literature. But, in Hawai`i there are predators, and they quickly cull the mutants.

The founding stock on O`ahu was from a diverse group of wild-caught individuals. Maui's population is from a small number from the O`ahu population. They show more mutants, I am told.

Interesting nobody is going to comment on how kalihi is telling use how to smuggle reptiles? Not a great idea buddy...

He wouldn't be alone...

He wouldn't be alone in that. Lots of chameleons are sent out every week. Relax.

I've heard there are a small number of jackson's showing up with black blotches covering anywhere from 10% to over 50% of their bodies. My ex-girlfriend just got back from Honolulu and saw some in the wild herself. Even some black blotched ones were in pet stores. The store owner said it was just stress but when she picked one up it went from the regular lighter colors to a very dark color and the black didn't change at all. She said it did not look necrotic or infect thought. Just black. I am wondering if anyone has any information on this. And just get them legally people. Unless your actually going on a trip to hawaii it is pointless to go there just to bring back a few jackson's, illegally at that. They were being sold for between $20 and $40 in san francisco pet store last time I was there, about six months ago.

It could have something to do with the caffeine solution. Maybe it's heart problems that caused the skin in certain areas to appear black. I still don't get why people would want to kill frogs though. I have nearly 70 frogs of all different kinds as pets and I love them :) Especially my phyllomedusa bicolor(Giant waxy monkey treefrogs) they are like the meller's chameleon of frogs. Totally docile and super friendly most of the time. Evil frog killing people. The only instance I agree with that in any sense is the cane toad problem in australia with them killing off most native species of amphibs and smaller reptiles.

The coqui frog is a horribly invasive species in Hawaii - 70 frogs is nothing when you have thousands outside your house all chirping. The problem is that there are very few predators of the coqui and greenhouse frogs so their numbers just keep multiplying exponentially.

I love the waxy monkey tree frogs! I had one (not the giant one) for about 5 years with no problems...it was a WC adult. Do you know how long they are supposed to live??

I do understand the problem Hawaii is having with the cochi (sp) frogs though..but I wish there was another way to get the problem solved without killing them. (Dream on, Lynda).

The regular painted waxy monkey frogs can live upwards of ten years. I have a pair that I acquired 6 years ago that were already 5 at the time. The tricky thing with them is getting them to breed. Thats why they are still $40+ for individuals. They eat like hogs too. We have plenty of loud annoying frogs in michigan too. American toads, gray tree frogs, spring peepers, bullfrogs, and the most annoying of them all chorus frogs. I realized the corqui are louder than them but I still personally wouldn't kill them. But I guess its just a personal thing. When I go to hawaii every year they can be pretty annoying while you are sleeping but thats why they make ipods and bose sound eliminating headphones.
