White nose residue

I've noticed that occassionally our panther chameleon has what looks like white residue build up around his nostril(s). He's eating, acting fine and no noisy breathing. Does anyone else notice this, something to be concerned about? Thanks.

Sounds like a cocaine problem. Definitely not good :D

Actually, how much are you supplementing/dusting? Chameleons may excrete excess minerals through the nose which is probably what you're seeing.

Not only are chameleons expensive, they have expensive habits too :D

Reptiles excrete salts through the nostrils. This shouldn't happen alot in chameleons I also see salt buildup in my panthers.

most of the time this problem is too much calcium.. how much are you dusting?
when you do dust with calcium with d3 or without d3.. only dust a couple of crickets per feeding.. or very lightly dust them .. you dont have to make them look like ghost.. its better to be under dusting then over dusting..but some would not agree.. thats just what I have read in the past.. Im no expert but that could be the problem..

I would still check him in a program.. thats only if he is staying out all night.. and blowing his whole paycheck on a friday night.. lol

Dusting........

I suggest you take a closer look at your supplementation. You should barely be able to see the supplement on the feeder insect. Veiled chameleons definitely have a salt gland connected to their nostrils. It is pretty normal for some salt to accumulate around their nostrils. I don't see this with any of my Panther chams. I don't think I've ever seen white stuff around their nostrils other than shedding skin. I may be wrong about Panthers. I'm just going with what I see with mine. I've got enough of them that I would think I would see it if it was normal.

i agree with eldorado. my cham was getting the same thing too, he even had a little white crusty on his nose when i bought him. it is an overabundance of supplements. i was also over dusting and made the mistake of also adding D3 and calcium to his drinking water. at the advice of others on this site, i now have a dusting schedule and have no problems with the crusty nose!
Monday, Wednesday, Friday i dust with calcium/D3, Tuesday, Thursday i dust with plain calcium, sat i use calcium with vitamins and sun i don't dust.

try no to over do it. thats what i was doing, but now i have a healthy cham with no [drug addiction ;)] nose crusties :)
