My Yemen Chameleon has just laid a medium sized (15-20) clutch of eggs, much to my surprise, and i'm at a loose end as to what to do with them.
I bought them from a private seller in March 08', he was keeping them together in a large Exo Terra Terrarium. The female had laid a clutch of eggs shortly before i purchased her and the male. I separated the male and female into separate Terrariums around April - May 08' as the female began to get aggressive towards the male.
They have not been together since and i am not sure whether they did mate during the 2 months that they were housed together when i first bought them. Is there any chance that the eggs are fertile as the the male and female have been separate for nearly 7 months now. I am not too sure about gestation periods of Yemens, but i am aware that they can retain sperm for an amount of time.
The female did go through the whole process of digging test tunnels and she did go off her food for a while too. She has laid and buried her eggs in one corner of the tank and is currently laying on top of them. I did not remove her and place her in a laying container as i really wasn't expecting her to lay eggs.
How should i go about incubating the eggs? I have read that temperatures of between 79-mid 80's F should be fine and that they should be kept in around 6-12 inches of moist sand/peat. Should they be kept in dark conditions and kept slightly moist?? How long will it take before i can check if they are fertile?? Any help is greatly appreciated.
