would you talk to the store manager?

ETA: I have been reading the posts for a while but this was my first time chiming in. :)

I was at Petco over the weekend. They have 3 veileds that i peaked in on. Their cage was a sad place with only the water dripper to climb on. There were 3 in the space of about a 10 gallon tank. The one i am concerned with is what i think to be about a 5 month old female. Definitely female, just not sure on age nor was the clerk.

As she approaches sexual maturity they have no provisions for her. The staff had very poor knowledge of chameleons including being able to sex them (there were 2 females and a male). The store clerk told the woman who was asking about them that they have never sold one at their store and these had beem there for many weeks. If no one buys the females dont seem like they stand a chance.

Would you call the store manager, tell him he has a larger female that is reaching sexual maturity and offer to buy her at a discounted rate? She was at least double the size of the other 2 with her. My next concern would be her harming the little ones.

I would talk to the manager if, as you say, the store staff don't seem to know anything about chams. They are banking on the possibility that they will be sold before they need to deal with it. See if the manager knows about gravid females or not. If not, inform them and bring a care sheet from a neutral source (such as this forum) to back up what you say. As you don't know for certain this female will become gravid or not (some never produce infertile clutches), I'd be more concerned about one cham injuring or harassing another. Suggest they need to be separated. Be friendly and polite.

DO NOT buy this cham out of pity! A disgustingly large percentage of pet shop animal sales are motivated by customers wanting to rescue a mistreated animal. And, they'll finally get that cham sale to justify getting more chams to house incorrectly. And, are YOU prepared to deal with a gravid unhealthy female who may in fact be eggbound and dying? Be sure before you take that on.

I worked at a petco and 90% of the employees don't know the first thing about or even care about them. I would end up buying all of them and then fixing the order to not get more. I reported them twice. Animal Control and better business bureau. With in one week we had Animal control in my store on my GM's butt about losing a live animal licence in culver city. About a week later I was fired for feeding the baby corn snakes.
