Wondering how these look?

This is my first time allowing hornworms to turn to moths. I'm wondering if these look ok. All I could think to use is our shredded Bill's as substrate. ? I guess they might be good for something after all. Hahaha. Although I'm not sure if it's ok to use sheddes paper or not. ?

Just order 1 cup every week that's what I had to do. And also don't give them to lizard when the cup starts to stink . I have Male & female vaileds . I got to many hornies and feed just the hornworms to my charms. My female got sick of them and quit eating 4.- 3. Weeks . I took her to the vet he put a tiny syringe of dog food in her mouth sent her home, said feed her all day .she looked bad so I didn't feed any more that day . She ate crickets today 20 .

You should not be feeding hornworms only or many of them in one day... That are essentially all water. Do you have your Veileds in different enclosures? Females have reduced feeding and temp requirements as they age so that they do not produce too many eggs. You should start a thread and have a husbandry review done.

@Beman or @Gingero can I still use the hornworm moths since they are in paper? Can or should i transfer them to soil? When watching the video, I was under the impression that when they start, they should not be moved or am I wrong?

Personally I would move them to soil. They are in paper that has ink on it. So this will leach out when the paper is wet. You would not want this moth then being fed to a cham in my opinion. I have moved them without issue to them. I moved them so they were in the same position. They will come out of the cocoon but I do not know how the ink would effect them in the cocoon or if it transfers through. Better to be safe then sorry I think.

Ok. Great! Thank you! I was thinking about getting a clay pot, fill it with soil and then putting screen over it for when they come out of the cocoon. Do you think it would be ok to keep them outside or should I keep them inside? It is low 70s to low 90s in my area.

Something like this with the screen around it.

You could do that. I just kept mine in a critter carrier. Nothing fancy. I had a pop up net basket when it came out. Yours is a bit more thought out then I was lol.
Lol! I'm a bit of a crafty person. I put a twist tie on the top so when they start to file, I can just undo the twist tie and open Rosco's door and let it in that way. I dont know how it will work, but we'll see. Are the moths, the same as the hornworms...treats? How long do the moths live and do I need to feed them anything?

So the moths don't eat exactly but if you take some sugar in water and then use like a shallow dish and put cotton balls in it so it soaks up the sugar water they will drink it.

I was two afraid to feed mine the moth. He was still young and the moth was huge. The moth went free. Shhhhh don't tell anyone.
But others feed them off. @jamest0o0 how do you feed off hawk moths. How many should be fed per day and how long do they live when they have emerged?

All great questions I'm wanting to know. I can't tell if they will be emerging soon or not. There are 4 that are dark and the rest are still greenish.

I won't tell anyone about your escapee moth if no one tells my mom who is coming in to town tomorrow that I had an escapee cricket this morning. ???

I don't know a whole lot about hawk moths. I've only ever let I think 2 emerge. They didn't live that long for me either. If the cham is big enough I'd just throw it in the cage.

He has just turned a year or so guestimating. I figured I'd try it instead of just throwing them away. He went on a hunger strike for like a week and those hornworms grow so big, so fast. Lol.

Yeah if he feels comfortable shooting for it I think you're good to go!
Ok. Awesome. I'm going to try it. Do you know if they are more like treats as well or can I give him 1 a day if he eats it? He does seem to like free range eating but I can't do that with the crickets as they escape my enclosure. I have some upfitting to do to it but we've spent so much money, it will have to come a bit later.

If he's going to eat them regularly I'd just try to dust them and see if they'll slurp up some liquid bee pollen, spirulina, or anything else.

Hmmmm. I have nothing but the dusting powder. I have so many since he went on a hunger strike. I don't want to only offer those but if I have them, I might as well use them if he'll eat them. It seems as though they are not all going to emerge at the same time though which is why I was askin about how often I can give them to him. He isn't a big eater but I think it might be because he might be getting ready to shed. I've only had him 5 weeks but based off of what the lady I rescued him from said, he should be shedding soon (if they shed every 2 to 3 months). I've taken him to the vet a week ago and he has a clean bill of health other than being slightly dehydrated but i just got his misting system together and installed today! Woohoo! I never thought I'd be so happy to see a pump. Lol. These are what the hornworms look like right now.[/QUOTE]
