Why do chams shed skin?

Their skin does not grow in the same way the animal's body does, so occasionally it has to be shed and replaced with new skin. Most herps grow throughout their lives, but once they are adults the growth rate is very slow.

Our cham always seems so much softer right after a shed, it's pretty cool.

They also do it to heal. So for example, if your chameleon scrapes an arm you'll see that their arm will shed independently of everything else once it is healed/almost healed.
