When taking my Veiled outside where he can get really hidden between plants it leads me to believe that perhaps I'm not providing enough cover for him in his enclosure. I have a Ficus and a Pothos in his cage.
The leaves on the Ficus are clustered near the top don't provide him much cover unless he's moving around near the very top (and even then, Veileds are big and Ficus leaves are not!) The Pothos hasn't been in the cage long and therefore hasn't really had a chance to create lots of cover for him.
Near the mid to bottom of the Enclosure there is not much cover, although there are quite a few artifical vines hanging so he can get down to go hunting, but other than that the lower half of the cage is relatively leaf-free because the UV light doesn't penetrate enough.
Ficus's are known to be very versatile at losing their leaves and recreating them in places more suitable for absorbing light. The Ficus is mostly bare near the bottom. While the Pothos has a few hanging vines (it's attached to the top of the cage in a hanging basket)
So the question becomes does the lack of cover while hunting or going near the bottom going to be stressful? Should I add more cover? Or should I just wait and see what . I have a few fake plants for when he was smaller, but I'm reluctant to introduce those again as i'd rather keep everything "as natural" as possible.
Should I add another plant near the bottom (a hibiscus perhaps? I tried this but the poor thing died!) and how do I care for a plant that doesn't have the light needed to keep it sustained? Should I introduce another UV grow lamp closer to the bottom? I suppose the fake plants wouldn't need any sort of artifical light near the bottom to keep them clean and green. What are my options?
