History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.
Came to me with awful MBD, very under weight, very dehydrated - doing well and gaining weight/strength. Shedding well.

Highest basking point is 85-80F, Floor level around 72F. Lowest over night temp around 68F

Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
70% at least, 80% at highest - maintained with misting

Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
Alas, no live plants yet until new viv. Currently a combo of silk plants and plastic plants to retain moisture for drinking

Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?
Top of cage appros 6ft from floor, quiet area, corner of a quiet room. No draughts.

Location - Where are you geographically located?
Bristol, SW England

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about.
Keeps sitting with his mouth open! Was doing this when I got him as basking areas far too hot - reduced temps and this stopped immediately. He doesnt appear to be dehydrated at all, and went to the vets on Friday and again today (monday) and vet is confident theres no respiratory infection! Only does this during the day when basking. Eating well, active, and no mouth gaping while sleeping.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Amanda

Haha I was staring at him today (i've been staring at him since this started on Saturday!) and saw him yawn! It was the CUTEST thing!! :p

He isn't a reptile specialist, but has an interest in reptiles and has been treating them for 40 years (hes an old fart!) - he's also very interested in reptile medicine and is always willing to go and do up to date research on the issue (i have the benefit of working with him).

What he did suggest, is that it could be the start of a respiratory infection, and he's not showing any symptoms yet, so said to keep an eye on him. He doesn't want to give him antibiotics "just in case" it is a resp infection because he's still fragile from his previous owner, and doing so well, we don't really want to upset the balance that has just been established by giving him antibiotics if they aren't needed.

I'll upload some photos of his gaping...its not THAT bad but enough to worry me!

Is the probe where he sits when his mouth is open? Of course this is with him not sitting over the probe. :)

I've had it there to measure the temps yeah - its about 80F where he chooses to sit - he has branches higher and lower that he can get to easily

Well, I spoke to the vet again today, he seems quite concerned, thinks it could be something underlying as a result of long term calcium deficiency. He's going to speak to another vet who specialises in reptiles and get back to me. I can see me having to travel 50 miles and spending a FORTUNE at the reptile specialist place - argh!

let us know how it goes! i hope all gets on well for your lit'l one! my cham has been doing the same thing for the last few days and i've wanted to get her to the vet but all the good vets are out for the holiday. i'll have me fingers crossed for ya!

My vet spoke to a reptile specialist who recommended a blood screen and horizontal x-rays to check his airways werent being occluded by old fractures etc.

His x-rays look clear although there is some kind of spotty calcification in his lungs, but it could be where old rib fractures have healed. His bones are looking much better than 4 weeks ago when he had his first lot of x-rays.

A blood sample was also taken and is being sent to a specialist reptile pathology lab for testing (eeek - vets bills!) so we will see what that comes back with.

He has also given antibiotic cover as a preventative measure, incase there is some respiratory infection developing.

Who knows what's going to be found....
