I have experienced the following situation:
1) a few perlite bits that where covered with rocks "reemerged" after some serious rainfall.
2) I witnessed a male hoenelii shooting said perlite bits.
3) He passed the bits without issue.
Perlite really has no business being anywhere near chameleons. I still have some in a pot that is in a cage. I have screen down and I have river rocks over that, but I still feel I need to poke around in the pot every so often just to be sure....
It has been suggested that some species may include land snail eggs in their diet. And that perlite may represent this, or a similarly looking, food item to the chameleon. Certainly plausibile.
Perlite; edible asbestos in your chameleon's home.
Now I have to repot...
